Cornell's Online Catalog
Search Commands, Subject Searching, Keyword Searching, and other functions of the online catalog are explained under the help button in the catalog or at Help Using the Cornell Library Catalog.
Searching library catalogs is particularly challenging for medievalists because the terms medieval or Middle Ages often do not appear in the subject heading. One way to get around this limitation is to use a guided keyword search-- type middle medieval in the first box, choose "any of these" in the middle pull-down menu (which tells the system to look for either medieval or middle ages in the title, subject, notes, etc.), and leave the last pull-down menu on keyword anywhere, then use the other search boxes to add additional terms. For example:

Some typical examples of
Library of Congress subject headings (and terms) for medieval studies:
| Germany
History 1273-1507 Sources. |
Tip: To retrieve a browsable list of subject headings for the medieval period of a modern nation (especially early medieval) --use the basic search in the CU online catalog, choose subject heading, then type the nation, then history, then to. This will produce a list containing such essential headings as:
France History to 987
(which will provide cross-references to Carolingians and Merovingians)
Germany History To 843
Spain History To 711

SELECTED WEB SITES
Finding Internet Resources Search engines (such as the highly rated Google) or Internet subject guides for the World Wide Web can be useful resources. A search engine is software that allows you to search the contents of web pages and a subject guide is a web page that uses menus and lists to sort and classify web sites. Be cautious with material and information freely available on the web (not to be confused with Cornell-restricted web-based databases). Evaluating Web Sites is a helpful guide to using web resources.

Managing Information using Bibliographic/Citation Software
RefWorks is a web-based program that allows you to easily collect, manage, and organize bibliographic references by interfacing with databases. RefWorks also interfaces directly with Word, making it easy to import references and incorporate them into your writing, properly formatted according to the style of your choice. For more information and to sign up for an account: http://www.refworks.cornell.edu. RefWorks workshops are regularly held on campus. RefShare, a new component of RefWorks, allows sharing of your personal RefWorks references with the world. For concrete examples of its potential, see Virginia's Bibliographies on assorted medieval topics: Anglo Saxons, Early Medieval Europe, 12th century, Crusades and Medieval Acre, Hundred Years War, Medieval Law Courts
EndNote allows you to build your own database of bibliographic references from a variety of resources, including library catalogs and periodical indexes. EndNote interfaces with several standard word processing programs and provides direct connections to resources, making it easy to import references and incorporate them in your writing. EndNote (or RefWorks) is highly recommended for researchers. EndNote workshops are regularly held on campus.
