A database of journal articles and research reports in the field of education. In addition to providing access to the standard education journals, it provides brief summaries of educational research reports and projects (mainly supported by the U.S. Office of Education). The unpublished reports are available on microfiche at Mann Library; they are called ERIC documents and are identified by a number in the AN field that is preceded ED.

LLBA: Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts. San Diego: Sociological Abstracts Inc., 1967- .

LLBA is an index for scholarly articles about language and language behavior, regardless of disciplinary focus. Abstracts are grouped under such headings as linguistics, psychology, communication sciences, hearing, etc. with appropriate subdivisions. Entries are drawn from more than 1,000 journals, reports, occasional papers, etc., in some 30 languages.

Indexes and abstracts 1,300 leading international journals in psychology and related behavioral disciplines including psychiatry, sociology, anthropology, education, and pharmacology. PsycFirst, the Web version, covers articles for the last three years. PsycInfo, the Telnet version, covers journal articles from 1967 to the present and book articles from 1987; it is updated monthly. The print version, Psychological Abstracts, is available at Olin Ref (Z 7203 .P973), which began in 1927. All versions of this abstracting service use the vocabulary and index terms from the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms in Olin Reference (Z 7203 .P9731 1994).

Social Sciences Citation Index. Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information, 1970- .
(Library Gateway Web version; print version: Olin Ref Z 7161 S68)

An index to works cited in the current periodical literature of the social sciences, covering over 2,000 journals. The unique feature of SSCI is that it allows the user to find relevant material based on where a particular reference has been cited. Using a key reference on a topic, other articles which have cited that article are identified. The index can also be searched by keywords in the titles of articles. The Web version on the Library Gateway covers 1988 to date.

The Social Sciences Abstracts is an author and subject index to more than 400 of the most important scholarly periodicals in the fields of anthropology, area studies, economics, environmental science, political science, psychology, public administration, sociology, and related subjects. Social Sciences Index is the print version; it has no abstracts. Only 77 social science periodicals were covered by its predecessor, the Social Sciences and Humanities Index.

Contains critical articles and literature reviews on the current year's significant research topics in psychology. A cumulative author/title index appears in every fifth volume.

Developmental Review: Perspectives in Behavior and Cognition.
New York : Academic Press, 1981- . (Mann BF 721 .D483; Olin BF 721 .D48 [through 1995])

A journal that focusses on methodology and contains literature reviews for the subfield of developmental psychology. Indexed in PsycFirst and PsycInfo.

Katz, Bill, and Linda Sternberg Katz. Magazines for Libraries. New York: Bowker, 1969- .
(Uris Ref Z 6941 K21+; also Olin)

Magazines for Libraries is an annotated listing of over 7,000 periodicals and a good source of information on the major journals in psychology. Each entry gives name of periodical, beginning publication date, publisher, editor, address, price as well as indexing, circulation, and level of audience. One-paragraph annotations describe the scope, political slant, and other aspects of the publication. Arrangement is topical, bringing together magazines and journals on like subjects. To find an individual title, use the title index at the end of the volume.

Dyer, Colin. Beginning Research in Psychology Cambridge, Mass.: Blackwell, 1995.

Geared toward the needs of anyone who is pursuing investigative work in psychology. Dyer's work provides a straightforward introduction to techniques of behavioral research. "Soft" methods , such as interviews and participant observational studies are included in addition to traditional experimental methods. Includes a subject index, many useful charts and graphs, and appendices on topics, such as ethical standards, presenting the results of an investigation and making references to the research.

Mussen, Paul H., ed. Handbook of Child Psychology. 4th ed. 4 vols. New York: Wiley, 1983.
(Mann Ref BF 721 C28 1983; also Uris stacks BF721 H23 1983)

This handbook presents a survey of the field of child psychology from 1970 through 1983, when it was published. Its four volumes are arranged according to the four predominant divisions in the field: theory and methods, biological bases of behavior and infancy, cognitive development, and social and personality development. The Handbook is the fourth edition of Carmichael's Manual of Child Psychology, which can be used for information from before 1970.

Wolman, Benjamin B., ed. Handbook of Developmental Psychology. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hall, 1982.

This handbook covers the entire span of human life and is divided into six sections. The first is devoted to the various research methods and theories, part two to prenatal life and infancy, part three deals with childhood, part four with adolescence, part five with adult years, and part six with aging. Extensive bibliographies are found at the end of each chapter; author and subject indexes located at the end of the volume.

An alphabetically organized reference text for psychology and other behavioral sciences, including "terms and concepts from research methodology, experimental design, testing and scaling, and statistics." A dictionary of terms covering the scope and diversity of contemporary cognitive psychology. Entries summarize topics and are one to several pages in length; each is followed by a brief bibliography for further study.

Corsini, Raymond J., gen. ed. Encyclopedia of Psychology. 2nd ed. 4 vols. New York: Wiley, 1994.

A major encyclopedia in the field of psychology. Includes both brief descriptive and biographical entries and longer analytical essays. An attempt was made to cover all fields of psychology in an objective manner. Entries are individually authored, and often include cross-references and bibliographies. Volume 4 consists of name and subject indexes as well as an alphabetical listing by author of all 15,000 bibliographical references in the first three volumes.

Harre, Rom and Roger Lamb. The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Psychology. Cambridge: MIT, 1983.
(Uris Ref BF 31 E5654 ; also Olin, Mann, JGSM)

The editors have attempted to cover not only the three main areas of contemporary psychology (cogni- tive, psycholinguistic, and neuro) but have also included terms and concepts found "in the theories and practices of lay folk" (Preface). Articles are arrangement in alphabetical order and run in length from a paragraph to several pages. Many of them contain bibliographic references for further reading.

Ramachandran, V. S., ed. Encyclopedia of Human Behavior. 4 vols. San Diego: Academic Press, 1994.

A collection of reviews for research in psychology. Lengthy, signed essays written by acknowledged experts in the field present an overview of research on each topic. Each essay provides a concise selected bibliography.

Squire, Larry R., ed. Encyclopedia of Learning and Memory. New York: Macmillan, 1992.
(Uris Ref BF 318 E56 1992; also Mann Ref)

A compendium of 189 articles that encompass the full range of current knowledge about learning and memory (Preface). Leading scholars in neuroscience and psychology have contributed lengthy essays which include references for further study.

A comprehensive and definitive compendium of information about human intelligence. Contains over 250 articles of varying lengths dealing with all aspects of human intelligence (Preface). Articles include lengthy bibliographies for further reference.

FIND BOOKS ON YOUR TOPIC

THE CORNELL LIBRARY CATALOG

The Cornell Library Catalog currently includes all items from all Cornell libraries cataloged since 1973, some pre-1973 items, and items on order or in process. Included in the Cornell Library Catalog are books, periodicals and government documents, as well as some other materials located in the libraries at Cornell. The catalog provides the call number, the name of the library, and the circulation status for most materials.

WHEN TO CHECK THE CARD CATALOGS

When the book you want was published before 1973 and it's not in the Cornell Library Catalog, check the card catalog located in the John M. Olin Library. This card catalog contains cards for authors, subjects and titles filed in an alphabetical, word-by-word arrangement for books cataloged before December 31, 1980. Whenever you cannot locate the material you need, ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.

The authoritative style manual for anyone writing in the field of psychology. Its chapters discuss the content and organization of a manuscript, writing style, the American Psychological Association style, and typing, mailing and proofreading. In addition, Chapter 6 describes the journals of the American Psychological Association.

In Mann, the reference desk is in the far room on the second floor; in Olin the reference and information desks are on the main floor across from the catalogs.
