Electronic Classroom, Uris Library
Media Classroom B, Uris Library
Ujamaa Main Lounge

Purpose:

Since its introduction into the academy by the University of California - Berkely academics and pundits have examined hip hop, tracing its roots and its effects on youth culture. In this workshop students investigate the underlying concepts and themes presented in exerpts from Tricia Rose's "Black Noise," a transcription of Mos Def's "Hip Hop," and selected readings from corresponding Freshman Writing Seminars. Students perform basic and guided keyword searches for media in the Cornell Library and on the Web. The workshop ends with students developing their own topics for further inquiry.
