Find Dissertations

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses

Definitive subject, title and author guide to virtually every American dissertation from 1861-1980. Dissertations published from 1980 forward include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Master’s theses published from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. More than 600,000are available in PDF formats for immediate free download. Citations to pre-1980 dissertations also included.

Find Articles/Papers

Sociological abstracts (OCLC Web : 1963- )

Abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Provides citations from 1963 to the present, and abstracts since 1974, to articles in over 1,500 journals, conference papers, books, and dissertations. Direct links to full text articles are provided for selected journals.

SocINDEX (Ebsco)

Indexes and abstracts articles in more than 590 "core" Sociology journals, some dating back to 1895. In addition, provides data mined from more than 500 "priority" coverage journals as well as 1,040 "selective" coverage journals. Also includes indexing for books, monographs, conference papers, and other sources. Offers coverage from all subdisciplines of sociology. Direct links to full text articles are provided for many journals.

Social sciences citation index (Web of Science)

Indexes current and retrospective bibliographic information,1956 onward, from more than 1,700 high-impact social science journals. Also includes links to the full bibliographies of articles. Cited-reference searching permits forward and backward literature reviews (footnote tracking); related-record searching links articles that share similar works cited.

EconLit (OCLC Web: 1969- )

Index of books, journal articles, dissertations, and articles in books. Subjects covered in include economic theory and history, fiscal theory, econometrics, agricultural economics, public finance, demography, monetary theory, international economics and others.

ERIC

National education database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Contains over one million citations covering research documents, journal articles, books, technical reports, program descriptions and evaluations, and curricular materials in the field of education. Also includes abstracts, citations, and selective full-text.

NBER Working Papers

NBER researchers initially report their findings in these scientific papers aimed at other professional economists. Nearly 700 NBER Working Papers are published each year, and many subsequently appear in scholarly journals.

Population Index

Through the year 2000, provides indexing for books, journal articles, working papers and other materials with population subjects. Available full text, 1937-1999 through JSTOR.
Population Index on the Web has more than 45,000 abstracts published between 1986 through 2000. The database can be searched by author, subject, geographic region, and citation text.

Race Relations Abstracts (Ebsco)

Indexes and abstracts over 300 publications providing the latest information and research findings in the area of race relations, including discrimination, education, employment, health, politics, law and legislation. In addition to journal articles, provides summaries of books and conference papers from around the world.

Research Library (ProQuest)

Indexes and abstracts over 800 general interest magazines and scholarly journals in the social sciences, humanities and sciences. Full text of many articles is provided. Also included are citations to selected newspapers, and television and radio programs.

SSRN

Social Science Research Network (SSRN) is devoted to the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research and is composed of a number of specialized research networks in each of the social sciences. The eLibrary consists of an Abstract Database containing abstracts on over 247,700 scholarly working papers and forthcoming papers and an Electronic Paper Collection currently containing over 204,000 downloadable full text documents. The Networks encourage readers to communicate directly with authors and other subscribers concerning their own and others' research

JSTOR

JSTOR is a searchable database containing the full text back issues of several hundred scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, music, ecology and botany, business and other fields. Last 5 years of journals are not available through JSTOR.

LexisNexis Statistical

Provides comprehensive access to U.S. statistical information. Includes an index to over 100,000 U.S. government, state, local, privately-produced and international statistical publications from 1973 to present, abstracts and tables, and background information.

Data Archives:

CISER Data Archive

The Data Archive of the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research (CISER) maintains a collection of machine-readable social and economic data sets, consisting of over 19,000 online files and thousands of studies on CD-ROMs and diskettes. It is also a centralized facility for information services on numeric data files, their acquisition, storage, maintenance, and processing.

ICPSR

This web page provides search and browsing access to abstracts and data sets in the world's largest archive of computerized social science data at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). ICPSR Direct allows Cornellians to download data directly from links in the ICPSR catalog of holdings after they provide name, Cornell affiliation, department, and e-mail address. After registering, you may obtain data by entering your e-mail address and using a Cornell IP address. Access to off-campus Cornell users is provided by the Cornell University Find Databases function. The CISER Data Archive can assist students in downloading the complete files.

US Cross-sectional and time series:

2000 Census

The U.S. Census Bureau provides this gateway to data from the decennial census. The site provides a range of access from packaged and searchable tables to downloadable data and GIS files.

ARDA

The American Religion Data Archive (ARDA) collection includes quantitative data on churches and church membership, religious professionals, and religious groups (individuals, congregations and denominations). The web site facilitates comparisons across data files by allowing users to search data files on topics of interest, download and compare the results. Also provided are links to related sites as well as maps and reports on religious congregations and membership.

CPS

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The CPS is the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics of the U.S. population as well as on a variety of topics including school enrollment, income, health, voting, and fertility. This government site provides search software for documents or the data.

DataWeb

Sponsored by the U.S. Census Bureau, DataWeb provides access across the Internet to demographic, economic, environmental, health and other databases housed in different systems in different agencies and organizations. The statistics, census data and survey data are in a collection of systems and software that provide data query and extract capabilities, as well as data analysis and visualization tools, i.e., the DataFerrett.

GSS

The General Social Surveys (GSS) are designed as part of a program of social indicator research, replicating questionnaire items and wording in order to facilitate time-trend studies. This collection is a cumulative dataset that merges all data collected as part of the General Social Surveys from 1972 to the present. GSS files are available from the CISER Data Archive or ICPSR. The NORC-GSS cumulative data file 1972-2002 on CD-ROM is available in the Olin Library Electronic Text Center.

IPUMS

The Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) consists of thirty-seven high-precision samples of the American population drawn from fifteen federal censuses and from the American Community Surveys of 2000-2003. It assigns uniform codes across all the samples and brings relevant documentation into a coherent form to facilitate analysis of social and economic change.

US Longitudinal:

NELS

For the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS) a representative sample of eighth-graders were first surveyed in the spring of 1988. A sample of these respondents were then resurveyed through four follow-ups in 1990, 1992, 1994, and 2000, on a range of topics including: school, work, and home experiences; educational resources and support; the role in education of their parents and peers; neighborhood characteristics; educational and occupational aspirations; and other student perceptions. Files are available from the National Center for Education Statistics.

PSID

The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) is an ongoing data collection effort begun in 1968 in an attempt to fill the need for a better understanding of the determinants of family income and its changes. The questions asked fall generally under the headings of economic status, economic behavior, demographics, and attitudes. Specifically, they deal with topics such as employment, income sources and amounts, housing, car ownership, food expenditures, transportation, do-it-yourself home maintenance and car repairs, education, disability, time use, family background, family composition changes, and residential location. Files are available from the CISER Data Archive or the ICPSR data archive.

Polling and Public Opinion Data: A Research Guide

A guide prepared by Cornell Librarians focusing primarily on sources of data and reference titles.

Polling the nations

A compilation of more than 14,000 surveys conducted by more than 700 polling organizations in the United States and more than 80 other countries from 1986 to the present. Each of the nearly 350,000 records reports a question asked and the responses given.

Poll track

Database of over 5,000 public opinion surveys on political races, important issues and national figures. Roper Center for Public Opinion Research

This site includes sources in opinion polling such as Gallup, Harris, Roper; ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC; Los Angeles Times, New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. The database is maintained by the Roper Center, a non-profit education and research organization in the field of public opinion, polls and public policy. To link to the Roper Center iPOLL site go to the iPOLL login page and enter your e-mail address. On your first login, you'll be asked to register. After your first visit, your e-mail address acts as your login. Using iPOLL from the Roper Center site requires that you use the site directly from a Cornell IP address on the Ithaca campus.

Bibliographic Software:

RefWorks is a web-based program that allows you to easily collect, manage, and organize bibliographic references by interfacing with databases. RefWorks also interfaces directly with Word, making it easy to import references and incorporate them into your writing, properly formatted according to the style of your choice. EndNote allows you to build your own database of bibliographic references from a variety of resources, including library catalogs and periodical indexes. EndNote interfaces with several standard word processing programs and provides direct connections to resources, making it easy to import references and incorporate them in your writing.

RefWorks or EndNote is highly recommended for researchers. workshops are regularly held on campus.
