Notes from the workshop on 11/17/2004
A CRP class is looking for census data from 1980, for the town of Nichols. The Geolytics Census CD is probably the best choice for this class.
From the Olin & Uris Libraries web page, check the ETC holdings page to determine which workstation will run the CD (and for the CD call number, if you need it).

CensusCD 1980 holdings from the ETC holdings page:

You will find the disk by call number on the ETC CD shelves, or on the Return Shelf (black metal cabinet). There is a also a large, black binder sitting on the black cabinet, or on the Guides shelf, with step-by-step instructions, including screen shots, for each Geolytics Census product.
Place the CD in the CD drive. Click on ETC databases and find the CD on the list. Double-click the icon to launch the CD
In the 1980 CD, the basic process is as follows:
Before you begin, it's a good idea to choose File/New Request and give your file a name:

Next, under Area, choose a geographic level:

To retrieve data for the Town of Nichols, choose "MCD" (minor civil division). To retrieve data for the Village of Nichols, choose "Place". I chose MCD for the town of Nichols:

For MCD, the following options appear. Select the state, county, and town and press DONE:

Choose Subarea and select MCD, again:

Under Counts, select tailored counts and the select STF1A or STF3A or both. STF1A is data from the 100% count -- basic data from every household. STF3A is data from a sample count (1 in every 6 households) and includes many more variables:

Scroll through choices to highlight selections. Or, use the Search link at the top of the screen to search for choices
Highlight tables to move to the Counts window. In the Counts window, choose subcategories to move to the Selected Counts window. Press DONE.

Under RUN, choose Dbase (useful if you plan to import data into Arcview), or ASCII (comma or tab-delimited).

Voila!
Please note: Different Geolytics CensusCDs have slightly different search options.
