The following Association of College and Research Library Standards were used in the development of this series.

  1. The information fluent student understands the issues and tasks involved in framing the research question.
    (ACRL Standard 1: Determines the nature and extent of the information needed)
  2. The information fluent student understands the issues involved in accessing sources for gathering background information.
    (ACRL Standard 2: Accesses needed information effectively and efficiently)
  3. The information fluent student is able to evaluate sources to assess their reliability and to consider whether or not the amount of information is sufficient to address the issue.
    (ACRL Standard 3: Evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system)
  4. The information fluent student understands the issues and tasks involved in evaluating content and can incorporate that understanding into his/her knowledge base and value system.

  5. The information fluent student understands how to use information for a specific purpose.

    (ACRL Standard 5: Understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally)
