Note: The following are based on survey results of parabaik and palm leaf in the Rare and Manuscripts Collection, Kroch Library, Cornell University Library

Parabaik

Physical Fold Dimensions

    height: 2.5 inches to 7 inches, average of 6 inches

    width: 5.8 inches to 23 inches, average of 16 inches

Physical Presentation and Condition

Paper folded in a vertical accordion-way.

Most of the parabaik are white parabaik and rare manuscripts. There are some new materials in Thai language that were printed on brown paper and folded like a parabaik. There are also two black parabaiks.

Some parabaik have covers with raised design. These usually also comes with glass ornamental decorations and red and gold edges.

The number of lines of text per page range from 4 to 10 lines.

Some of the parabaiks have line drawings on page margins.

Document Types

Parabaiks are handwritten text with brush and ink.

Smallest significant character for parabaiks range from 3 mm to 7 mm with an average of 4.5 mm.

Smallest stroke width for parabaiks range from 0.2 mm to 1 mm with an average of 0.5 mm.

Color

Parabaik writings are mostly in black ink. There were some pages with red inks.

Language

Most of the parabaiks are in Shan language. There are several manuscripts in languages that are not identifiable by the surveyors.
