Access Services Steering Committee Minutes

October 10, 2001

Present: Howard Raskin, Deb Lamb-Deans, and Susan Currie (recorder).

  1. E-Reserve Copyright Policy:
Earlier this fall, a draft e-reserve copyright policy was sent to ARL for review, and their comments have now been received. Revisions, additions, and changes were made to the draft, which is to be forwarded on the PSEC. Deb Lamb-Deans will discuss the proposed policy at PSEC. The policy will then be forwarded to University Counsel for review before it is implemented.

  2. E-Reserve Help in Catalog:
Lee LaFleur (Documentation Committee) and Susan have worked to begin putting up help pages for the use of e-reserve. First, a basic "how to access e-reserve" will be put into place but additional help pages are needed. Deb brought sample Help and FAQ pages from institutions that are also using Image Server. We will review these to see what problems we may encountering that other institutions have discovered, so that we can include them in our Help pages. We know that currently, anyone using a modem encounters slow downloading as well as other problems. Deb has identified additional problems and volunteered to write a short report outlining these so that additional technical support can be requested. Howard and Susan will work with the Documentation Committee for additional Access Services related Help pages.

  3. E-metrics:
We reviewed the list from Christian, which was presented at the Access Services Program Committee on October 2, 2001. For the Access community, not having any measure of course reserve activity in Voyager is a problem, especially for e-reserve. Reserve is among the most heavily used services, and we currently have no way to track usage.

  4. Document Delivery:
Both Olin/Kroch/Uris and Mann are experimenting with a electronic document delivery service to the Cornell Community. The focus is to identify work flow and service issues. We discussed whether or not ILLiad, currently being used for ILL in the 5 ILL units at CUL, can be used for electronic document delivery. Howard and Cindy Golos at Mann have been investigating the possibility of using only the electronic delivery features (not any ILL features). We agreed that using a consistent software and procedures across CUL is desirable and decided to form a small task force for further investigation for the use of ILLiad (Howard Raskin, Susan Currie, Cindy Golos, Rick Lightbody, and Julie Copenhagen). Among the issues for using ILLiad are the question of technical support for all of CUL, set up and procedures for staff and which units at CUL would want to be included in electronic document delivery. The task force will look only at the possibility of using ILLiad and the Steering Committee will address the campuswide issues in consultation with PSEC.

  5. Future agenda items: Meet with Linda Miller to discuss procedures for generating reports to be used in cleanup of old, undeleted reserve records, and Image Server records in the cataloging client and e-reserve help in the OPAC.
