Suggestions for Future Programs
The Cornell University Library vision is "leadership through excellent, innovative
library service."
In order for the Academic Assembly to serve as a forum for professional discourse, the Academic Assembly Steering Committee brings in experts from the field of information science and related areas to speak to members of the library community. The Library Administration has set aside money in support of this effort in order to encourage broader participation in program development. To facilitate program planning for CUL, the Steering Committee invites members of the library community to submit proposals for future programs and speakers. Priority for funding will be given to those programs intended to be presented at Academic Assembly sessions, however lectures, seminars, and workshops with broad library appeal will also be considered.
Submitted program proposals should reflect the Cornell University Library Mission:
To support the instructional, research and service goals of the University by working collaboratively, creatively and efficiently to:
- Provide services that support physical and intellectual access to
information resources in fulfillment of the present and anticipated needs
of Cornell students, faculty and staff and, as appropriate, to alumni and
the broader public.
- Provide assistance and instruction on how to locate and use these
resources.
- Provide facilities and space to accommodate the library's collections and services as well as research and study.
Criteria
- All members of the Cornell University Library community are eligible to
submit program proposals.
- The Academic Assembly Steering Committee is the agency responsible for
reviewing program proposals according to the following criteria:
- The goals and objective of the programs should be clearly defined.
- The target audience should be clearly defined to be as inclusive
of the library community as possible.
- The topic should be of current importance, of popular demand or related
to the CUL mission and priorities.
- If the topic has been addressed recently, the amount of new information
should be sufficient as to warrant another program.
- The cost should be justifiable in terms of the nature and size of
the defined audience and importance of the topic.
- When appropriate, coverage should represent all sides of a controversial
issue.
- Proposed speakers should be skilled presenters as well as subject
experts.
- Timeline: Proposals will be accepted and reviewed throughout the year, especially in the first few years of this procedure. However, please be aware that the available funding is limited. Suggested lead-time is at least 6 months. We encourage proposals that are forward-thinking, both in scheduling and topic.
- The goals and objective of the programs should be clearly defined.
- Proposals for in-house programming are encouraged.
Proposals should be submitted to the Academic Assembly Steering Committee using the Academic Assembly Program Proposal Form.
