As a member of the Review Board for the Association of Research Libraries
digital library survey, Sarah was pleased to hear very complimentary comments
about Cornell's efforts.
The Academic Assembly Steering committee will be meeting with Sarah on a
quarterly basis. Sarah uses the AASC as a sounding board for ideas for
programs.
- Introduction Program Proposal form to propose speakers and/or programs,
which will benefit the Cornell Library community: Deb Lamb-Deans
Deb Lamb-Deans encouraged the submission of program ideas using the on-line
form: http://www.library.cornell.edu/staffweb/AcadAssem/AAprogprop.html
- Procedure 44 presentation and voting: Susan Markowitz
Elaine Engst moved that the amended working of procedure 44 be accepted.
Don Schnedeker seconded the motion. Paid leave for research or professional
development for library academic staff is available. Library staff is
encouraged to seek outside funding for leave of this nature. In the past
benefits have been negotiated on a case-by-case basis. The Fulbright
Fellowship program is covered. The changes in wording were approved.
Cornell Academic Paid Parental Leave Policy allows 12 weeks for the primary
caregiver. Family Medical Leave deals with un-paid leave time to care for
aging parents.
- Overview of the campus wireless plans: Oliver Habicht
Using the backs of computer punch cards for his notes, Oliver Habicht gave
a "show and tell" of the equipment needed to make wireless communications
possible in the CU Library. All units now have wireless capabilities. Red
Rover is the system now used, replacing NOMAD. An anonymous donor has funded
the installations of new equipment and the use charges for one year. Phase I,
a quick and dirty installation has been completed. Of 120 access points
available, the library has 70. During Phase II, access points will be added or
moved to different locations. People who are registered at the Johnson School
will be able to use Red Rover as well JGSM's own wireless system. Law and ILR
also have their own wireless systems.
For more information go to CIT's
Red Rover page: http://www.cit.cornell.edu/redrover/
Sarah mentioned that the anonymous donor paid for 35 wireless, but
stationary, workstations in Uris and Olin libraries.
- Academic Assembly highlights for 2000-2001: Barb Morley
Barb Morley reviewed plans for other programs:
- October 4: Oya Rieger will speak about distributed learning.
- November 8: EnCompass Team will give an up-date.
- Beginning this year, we will invite a member of LMT to present a topic
for Academic Assembly. Claire Germain has agreed to inaugurate this program
for us on December 6th.
- President Rawlings will speak with us later in the year.
- Pat Viele has proposed a program featuring representatives of various
"library schools" speaking on education of future librarians.
- We look forward to a program sponsored by the Committee on Professional
Development, and Sarah Thomas will give a "state of the library address".
