Subject: RLG Membership

Dear Council of Librarians,

The Cornell University Library has many relationships, and we invest considerable resources in participation in various organizations and groups. such as the Digital Library Federation, the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and the North East Regional Consortium (NERL). I have asked Ross Atkinson to lead an analysis of the value of our memberships in CRL and NERL. One of our most important affiliations over the years has been with the Research Libraries Group (RLG). Cornell is currently one of the largest users of RLG services, and we are active participants in the SHARES and PRESERV programs. I serve as a member of the RLG Board, where we are presently shaping a new strategic plan for RLG.

To inform a discussion of our relationship with RLG, which I am setting as the principal agenda item for the next Council of Librarians meeting on June 9, 1999, I have asked Christian Boissonnas to prepare a white paper on CUL/RLG interaction. What are the strengths of RLG programs and services for Cornell University? The RLG White Paper will examine the value of RLG membership and participation for the Cornell University Library, compare RLG programs and services to alternatives in the bibliographic marketplace, and assess both the tangible and intangible benefits of RLG for CUL. Christian will consult with a cross-section of Library staff to draw on their insights and experiences as background.

After reviewing the White Paper and discussing it with the Council of Librarians, the Library Management Team will consider the role RLG can best play in helping us meet the service needs of Cornell's faculty and students. Please feel free to share any information with Christian Boissonnas that you consider pertinent to his research.

Sarah
