The Distributed Learning Advisory Committee provided updates from their respective libraries about new and ongoing projects, issues, and priorities for 2002.

Adam Chandler: A Metadata Services Group has been established within the Central Technical Services to provide metadata services relevant to distributed learning.

Debra Lamb-Deans: LMT asked Peter Hirtle to serve as the Library's official liaison to the Counsel's Office regarding copyright and e-reserve issues. Also, Debra pointed out the problems that off-site students experience using Course Reserves in Voyager and suggested CourseInfo as an alternative E-reserve system.

Bill Kehoe: The Gateway Redesign Planning Group has been charged by the Library Management Team with recreating CUL's web presence in a way that improves functionality. The presentation of distributed learning services is one of the areas the group will be focusing on.

Oya Rieger: Announced that the Office of Distributed Learning is an official member of the Department of Library and Information Technology (D-LIT). Oya also announced the recent appointment of Ira Revels as Librarian for Educational Technology to the Office of Distributed Learning.

Oya is a member of the Cornell Working Group on Online Registration. Chaired by the Director of Finance and Administration from the School of Continuing Education, the purpose of the group is to discuss the registration process and rights and privileges for distance students. The goal is to provide the service model to all the Cornell schools that are offering courses to distance students.. Oya's focus will be on identifying library privileges for this group.

There is a Cornell copyright web page in the works, which aims to consolidate all sites devoted to copyright issues on campus. It will have educational curriculum for faculty and others who are supporting services for faculty. CUL, CIT, OIT, The Cornell Store, and Office of University Counsel are developing the service model.

Don Schnedeker: The Management Library has implemented a new product called Horizon Live, which is an interactive computer for teachers. It uses PUSH technology to connect the instructor to the students. The Management Library is investigating what implications this technology may have for Library Instruction.

JGSM is investigating a new distributed learning program at Queens University in Canada, which utilizes a similar technology where students are taught synchronously online. The University is looking for partners in the U.S. Don added that students at the Johnson School are currently taking the Queens University course.

Nancy Skipper: Discussed how the 24 X 7 software is being implemented into reference service. Following 24 X 7 training, four library clusters will determine how the new chat reference service will be used within their libraries. The software has a meeting function for which a use has not been decided yet. Check the OKU and ILR website for more information on how they are using this new service.

Kornelia Tancheva: Mann Library will use the 24 X 7 service specifically for a class of 300 students with weekly office hours.

Next Steps: We will review our goals for Faculty Course Support and members will provide suggestions for proceeding with content development.
