Distributed Learning Advisory Committee (DLAC)

Meeting Notes

August 5, 2002

Agenda
Organizing the CUL Component of the "Learning with Technologies Expo"

Background Information
The CU Unified Service Working Group (CU-USWG) is planning a distributed learning expo for January 2003 (tentatively set for January 16 or 17). The group was formed last year by Sarah Thomas and Polley McClure (Vice President, Information Technologies) to explore how to coordinate service access for faculty interested in using various distributed learning technologies. The goal of the group is to provide faculty with systematic assistance in identifying relevant resources and services in support of their distributed learning projects. The CU-USWG has representation from CIT, CUL, Office of Information Technology, Center for Learning and Teaching, School for Continuing Education, and Media and Technology Services. Tony Cosgrave and Oya Rieger represent the Library in the group. The group's agenda for 2002-2003 includes creating a CU Teaching with Technology service directory/campus guide and a Website, and holding a distributed learning expo in January 2002.

Goals of the Distributed Learning Expo
The fair will be composed of information/demo booths and short presentations. The goals include:

The CU-USWG would like to promote a faculty-centered, functional approach so booths/presentations will be organized by topics rather than by institutions (e.g., Web design, copyright, e-reserve, assessment, video conferencing, etc.).

Suggested CUL Plan
The August meeting of the CUL-DLAC committee was dedicated to discussing the DL Expo, which is being organized by the CU-USWG. The Advisory Committee specifically focused on the CUL component of the upcoming event. Here's the plan that was discussed and approved during the DLAC meeting for organizing the CUL's participation in the expo:

  1. Follow the functional organization presented on the "CUL Services in Support of Technology Mediated Instruction" (http://www.library.cornell.edu/odl/) Website for organizing the CUL component of the expo. This organization was an outcome of our joint effort (including several CUL groups) and matches the "faculty-focused" team of the expo. We'll represent the following library services (maybe merged booths):

  2. Tom Hickerson will assemble a small working group to work with Oya and Tony in getting ready for the event. This small working group will further define the goals of each library booth and help with the general logistical details of the expo.

  3. We will work closely with the functional groups (e.g., PSEC, Instruction Working Group, Metadata Working Group, etc.) in planning/staffing these booths.

  4. Oya will give the LMT a proposal outlining this plan to get their feedback.

The DLAC stressed the importance of developing strategies to get the faculty attend these sessions. The recommendation was for the USWG to conduct a quick market study to see if faculty are interested in attending such an event and what would be their expectations.
