ERC Meeting Notes

1/3/2000

Attending: Lynn Brown, Suzy S. Palmer, Ed Weissman, Bill Kara, Karen Calhoun, John Saylor, Diane Hillmann, David Block. Special Guests: Nancy Holcomb, Oliver Habicht, Laura Heisey

Due to members' schedules, we held an abbreviated meeting.

Unsticking Scifinder Scholar. Since July, we have tried to find a way to allow library patrons to view Chemical Abstracts, using ACS's proprietary client. With Karen's guidance, and Nancy's expert testimony, we devised yet another "solution," this time using an intermediate screen. What we propose is that the NOTIS 856 field and the Gateway record point to a screen that gives two sets of instructions-one for Library-owned computers, the other for the rest of the Cornell community-- for loading and configuring Scifinder Scholar. David will ask our Chemistry Reference Librarian (are you reading, Leah?) to supply these instructions.

Browser Plug-ins (helper apps). At this point, Nancy departed and Oliver and Laura arrived for a discussion of software requirements for networked electronic resources. This was a most agreeable encounter. We learned from Laura that the "standard software set" for the kiosks is whatever comes with Netscape 4.06 plus Power Point and Excel viewers and Scratch Pad. We also learned that Laura is willing and able to evaluate any additional plug-ins that selected networked resources require. All agreed that the logical time to bring such software to Laura's attention is as soon as it comes to ours, rather than establishing a schedule. We decided to send the plug-in that Bell and Howell requires for viewing Early English Books Online as a trial.

Minutes recorded by David Block .
