Meeting Notes
January 14, 2002
Attending: David Block, Phil Davis, Bill Kara, Marty Kurth, John Saylor, Ed Weissman, Scott Wicks
- Abbreviated-level records for DLF Digital Collections. We examined OPAC printouts of prototype records that CTS has prepared as a first step toward providing Voyager access to 288 digital collections accessible from the Digital Library Federation website. We endorsed moving forward with loading these records with the friendly amendment that the records for Cornell digital collections which duplicate records already in Voyager be removed from the DLF Collections load. We felt that these records would be good candidates to test OAI harvesting for ongoing updates, possibly using ENCompass when an OAI intake function is implemented. John agreed to contact the University of Michigan, who maintains the records in the DLF site, regarding their OAI compatibility. [Since our meeting, John sent an email inquiry regarding the OAI compatibility of the source records for the DLF Collections.]
- Aggregators in line for processing. We identified six aggregators to process next for title-level access. These are: Business Source Premier, Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch, Lexis-Nexis Congressional Universe, MathSciNet, and SourceOECD. We agreed to delay processing of the Dialog@CARL Basic Collection because of the problematic access and coverage of this resource. We agreed that it would be desirable to provide title-level access to the e-monographs offered by National Academy Press. However, NAP has not provided a means for harvesting bibliographic data for their e-publications, for example, by offering ISBNs and persistent title-level URLs. We felt that this lack was a collection development issue rather than a processing issue, so David and John agreed to pursue a negotiation with NAP through collection development channels. [Since we met, John emailed NAP about bib data for their e-monographs.]
- Academic Universe problem titles. A case arose in which an e-journal in Academic Universe with partial content and limited holdings duplicated an e-journal available to CUL from the publisher with full content and holdings, making life difficult for a patron and the staff who came to the rescue. We endorsed the practice of deleting AU records from Voyager when such cases come to light. Staff encountering problematic records should report them and tech services staff will remove them. When tech services staff meet to discuss ongoing maintenance issues surrounding e-resource records, they will devise a method for tracking title exclusions such as this AU title.
- Using SerialsSolutions data for HTML access. Several members of ERC favored using SerialsSolutions data as an interim approach to providing HTML access to e-journals, but we agreed that public services staff should weigh in on the idea before further action is taken.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 28, 2002, at 2:00 P.M. in 702 Olin.
