Meeting Notes

July 8, 2002

Attending: Ross Atkinson (guest), Nan Hyland, Bill Kara, Marty Kurth, John Saylor, Ed Weissman, Scott Wicks

  1. netLibrary Ross joined us to solicit our input regarding a proposed change to netLibrary access. The netLibrary consortium partners (Cornell/Columbia/Dartmouth/Middlebury/Hong Kong) have been discussing moving from the current i.d./password access method to i.p.-based access. The move would involve deleting the 4000+ netLibrary accounts that have been activated on Cornell workstations. We were generally in favor of the move because i.d./password access is cumbersome and, more importantly, because persons not affiliated with Cornell can maintain netLibrary accounts created on Cornell workstations and use those accounts to purchase netLibrary titles with Cornell funds. Ross will convey our preferences and rationales to the consortium partners. We raised two questions regarding the change in access method: First, we asked that netLibrary verify a netLibrary staff member's claim that users would be able to reopen closed accounts. Second, we asked whether we would be able to customize netLibrary's message to holders of accounts about to be closed. Ross will carry our questions forward to netLibrary. Additionally, Nan will put netLibrary access on the agenda for the next IRPC meeting so IRPC members can discuss public services implications of the proposed change.

  2. E-journal Maintenance Task Force. Because of ERC's interest in e-journal access, Marty highlighted the recent announcement that TSEG had formed an E-journal Maintenance Task Force whose charge includes coding e-journals in the catalog with an eye toward generating a catalog-based e-journal title list, developing an e-journal maintenance plan, and addressing ProQuest title-level access issues.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 22, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in 702 Olin.
