Electronic Resources Committee

9/14/98

Attending: Suzy S. Palmer, John Saylor, Lynn Brown, Diane Hillmann, Jerry Caswell, Bill Kara, Ed Weissman, Scott Wicks, David Block (chair & minutes)

This was a forms-dominated meeting. In response to the discussions of our last meeting, for which no minutes were taken, Jerry and David distributed a list of data bases loaded locally and a summary of activities the Committee has undertaken to date. In addition Diane had a table, prepared by Patricia O'Neill, that summarizes the electronic licenses currently in force between the library and various database providers.

We dealt with the last document first, and after several exchanges realized that we had agreement that a summary of such information (and more) should be a Committee priority. However, we remain divided over what form the summary should take, i.e. what the elements collected should be, and how it should be distributed, as an html file, in the NOTIS database, as part of the Gateway SQL database. We agreed to examine the compendium that Diane presented, make corrections in it and make suggestions for which additional data elements we need to collect.

Discussion of David's memo, ERC Activities (1/98-7/98), became the next order of business. Committee members felt that while the document made an adequate summary of activities, it was too abstract for general consumption and not specific enough for even the cognoscente to see what specific issues have been discussed and what actions had been taken to resolve them. David agreed to produce another draft for discussion.

Jerry's "Locally loaded SilverPlatter Files" was produced with an eye to identifying a database or databases which could be switched from local to remote access at a vendor site to test the consequences of this change. It now appears that NTIS will be the first resource to make the change.
