Recommendations for CUL Library Websites
- Under Development
Cornell policy
CUL web pages should include the Cornell logo. The logo
should always link to the Cornell home page (http://www.cornell.edu) and
should not be used as a link to another page. An ALT tag specifying ALT="Cornell
University" should be used. Details on the use of the logo as well
as a link to download the image are available at: http://www.cornell.edu/identity/screen/index.html
CUL Recommendations
- Include a link back to the Gateway from CUL web sites (either a text
link - Cornell Library Gateway or the new
logo).
- Unit Library sites should include a link to the catalog or the catalog
search box (see optional items below).
Other public CUL sites may also want to include this.
- Include a contact name, either an individual or a group that identifies
the authors of the site.
- Include a last updated date.
- Sites should be accessible [Definition: a web page that can be used
as effectively and for the same purpose by a person with a disability
as by a person without a disability]. See Accessibility
Tools for more on this.
Best practices
- Sans-serif fonts are easier to read on screens. Verdana and Arial
are recommended.
- Dark text on a light background is easier to read.
- Less text is best - users scan rather than read web pages.
- see How Users Read
on the Web
- Other design tips can be found at: Research
based Web Design and Usability Guidelines.
Optional items:
- If you would like to add a catalog search to your page see: Catalog
Search.
- If you would like to use the Library Gateway navbar see: Gateway
Navbar.
