QUARTERLY GENERAL SELECTORS MEETING
25 October 2001
Olin 106
We changed our traditional meeting spot to enable what was a meeting of demonstrations.
- MyContents: Adam Smith previewed MyContents, the latest addition to the MyLibrary suite, which will provide table of contents services to Cornell community members. The first phase will consist of TOC prepared by ISI and Ingenta, each of whom have their own stable of titles. MyContents will serve as an aggregator, providing a common look and feel, and a consolidator, of payments and vendor relations. A first phase, with titles selected (and paid for) by science selectors and ILR is set for release sometime this fall. Through it, the working group will test the programming they have designed as well as the timeliness of delivery by ISI and Ingenta.
The MyContents Working Group, which has established a website http://toc.mannlib.cornell.edu, invited interested selectors to keep in touch; Adam specifically mentioned possible formation of a selector subgroup to give advice on the TOC collection, vendor negotiation and the like.
- EndNote:
Bob Kibbee demonstrated some of the features of ISI's bibliographic package; its importing and search capabilities and formatting features, both of which are impressive. The context of the presentation was ISI's offer to the Library to provide a Cornell University site license (now before DRC) for and annual fee in the mid five figures and IRPC's "sense of the committee" endorsement.
Several selectors wondered if site licenses might more appropriately be handled through other Cornell entities, e.g., CIT and the distance learning initiatives. Clearly this would be a departure from traditional uses of central database fund, one that DRC should not take without considerable consultation.
- Voyager: Julie Stiles led us through some of the new features of (post patch) Voyager, principally the serials check-in module which now has "view only" access, something that selectors have wanted for some time. Julie and the selectors did an excellent job of observing the ground rules. This was to be a quick tour that pointed out new features as an introduction to more in depth sessions that selectors may desire. Please send requests for follow-ups to David.
- And then there is netLibrary: David briefly reviewed the contents of his memo (appended to these notes), outlining netLibrary's uncertain future.
