Instruction and Reference Program Committee (IRPC) Meeting Minutes

Announcements

  • Nan reminded everyone to put Instruction Sessions on the CUL Events Calendar.
  • Nan briefly showed the new wording on WebSpirs sites: "Find it at Cornell" for full-text materials as well as a link to the online catalog.
  • IWG put out a call for the fall IRPC retreat which will be held from 9AM to Noon on October 12th. The theme will be on instruction activities. The spring retreat will focus on evaluation of instruction.
  • Bob Kibbee mention the CU Services event that will take place in Barton Hall on Friday. Bob asked that materials suitable for the event be sent to him by Thursday (for example, student employment applications).
  • Peter Hirtle announced that the CUL Collaborative Learning Lab in Uris Library is now open. Sixteen students can work together. Refer questions from faculty to  Tony Cosgrave. There will classes offered in the lab also. Peter suggested having an IRPC meeting in the room.
  • Lynn Brown announced that the Unified Instruction Group is considering offering some classes on basic business sources.
  • In response to how the Reading Project is going, Lance directed us to the web site: http://reading.cornell.edu/ The panel talk will take place in Barton Hall on Sunday afternoon, August 22 and smaller discussion sessions will take place on Monday, August 23
  • Maureen mentioned the up-grade of the library gateway will be released on Wednesday. The new CU web site will be released on Thursday.

Agenda Item 1:  Database weeding committee
Nan asked for volunteers to help her evaluate the e-resources in the gateway. This is also an opportunity to suggest materials to add to the gateway. Send suggestions to Nan.

Agenda Item 2:  IRPC Web Site
Thad Dickinson and Ken Bolton demonstrated the IRPC web site. The web page will be only 3 levels deep. Suggestions included:

Agenda Item 3:  Lance and Oya reported on the Convergence Team 
They are looking at e-reserves, course paks, and web pages. They are a sub-group of  the Personalized Library Services Committee. 

Tom Hickerson has asked the group to produce a White Paper about the three ways of delivering course information:  the Cornell Store's course paks, ATC's Blackboard, and library's e-reserves. The goal is make one stop shopping for faculty.

Peter Hirtle suggested that training on Blackboard be offered again for CUL staff. Bob Kibbee will follow up with Angela Horne to arrange that later in the semester. This might lead to closer collaboration between CUL and ATC.

Agenda Item:  Paul McMillan gave a brief EnCompass 3.5 update.

  • The version will be released this week. The roll-out for CU will take place later in the semester (with plenty of warning to IRPC).
  • Most of the changes are on the back end.
  • De-duping will be possible.
  • There will be a button for full text.
  • The standard will be X# of hits out of X# of hits (50 out of 350). CU will be able to customize this, but an increase in the number of hits displayed will slow down the system.
  • The new search engine should give better search results. It has enhanced Boolean searching.
  • The new system is supposed to block initial articles from titles. This feature may related only to English words.
