Notes for the meeting on April 3, 1996
Attending: Ross Atkinson (Chair), Lee Cartmill, Claire Germain, Tom Hickerson, Jan Olsen, Catherine Murray-Rust, Ed Weissman.
Also attending: Tim Lynch, Lynne Personius
1. Brittle Book Scanning Program
Ross said that Anne Kenney would contact Mann Library and the Law Library to discuss their involvement in the Brittle Book Scanning pilot project. There being no other outstanding issues, SMG agreed the project should get underway. It will begin in July. Harvard University is embarking on a similar pilot project and this could result in an agreement to exchange digital files.
2. Big 11 Proposal
Ross distributed a proposal from the Big 11 libraries of New York State to the Mellon Foundation requesting a $50,000 planning grant for the development of a New York State Digital Library. If the grant is funded, NYU would serve as the lead institution. As one of the "eleven comprehensive libraries" in New York State, we will have some role to play in this planning; the extent of that role will depend upon how such planning eventually relates to our local goals.
3. National Digital Library Federation (NDLF)
Ross, Tom and Catherine will gather information and develop a proposal regarding the Library's participation in the NDLF Discovery/Retrieval Subgroup project. The aim of the project is to link the digital library home pages of participating institutions to the NDLF home page and "to integrate a web search tool into the homepage environment" in order to allow indexing of participant collections.
4. The Strawman
We discussed the two approaches to the library's resources, represented in the strawman as "Search the Catalog" and "Database Selection Guide." We agreed that they complemented each other and should both be represented in the prototype that we release for testing by the public in the fall. We asked the Digital Library Working Group to work with the Web committees to redesign the prototype home page. Specifically we asked that the Database Selection Guide screen appear on the home page beneath an enlarged "Search the Catalog" button. We also asked that the remaining items on the prototype home page be limited to buttons leading to unit library Web pages, to general library information such as the Cornell University Library Guide, schedules, calendars and library-wide policies (e.g., fines, circulation policies), and to announcements or news flashes.
5. Digital Library Working Group Status Report to SMG
We asked the Digital Library Working Group to edit its draft status report and to create an executive summary.
