Senior Management Group

Notes for the meeting on October 23, 1996

Attending: Ross Atkinson, Lee Cartmill, David Corson, Claire Germain, Tom Hickerson, Gordon Law, Jan Olsen, Catherine Murray-Rust, Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman.

Lynne Personius, Tim Lynch, Janet McCue, Sandy Payette and Martha Hsu attended the meeting to discuss plans for the November 11 professional staff meeting.

1. Professional staff meeting
Ed presented the preliminary plans for the professional meeting on November 11. We agreed on the following:

• SMG endorses the key recommendations of the groups. The Working Group chairs will create a document distilling the recommendations in the four reports. This will be distributed prior to the meeting and will serve to focus discussions in the break-out groups.
• The purpose of the meeting--to provide an overview of the issues and recommendations and to solicit staff input into how best to implement the recommendations, not whether to implement them. While money is an issue, it is out of scope in the discussions. The groups should not spend time on how much it will cost or what we have to give up to implement the recommendations.
• Who to invite to the meeting--all academic and exempt staff in the library.

2. SagaNet (Icelandic Digital Library) proposal
Tom presented some information on a proposal to the Mellon Foundation to create an Icelandic National Digital Library in cooperation with the National and University Library of Iceland. Plans are for the National and University Library of Iceland to act as the lead institution. Jan mentioned that access to the Mellon Foundation within the library has been very restricted. She would like to see a more open process for submitting proposals to Mellon.
