Science Team Meeting Minutes
08 February 2002
Attendees: Marty Schlabach, David Brumberg, Kizer Walker, Mary Patterson, Leah Solla, Pat Viele, Linda Stewart, Mary Ochs, Steve Rockey, Susanne Whittaker.
Scribe: Mary Ochs
- Cambridge Scientific Material Science Collection -- Mary Patterson reviewed the Cambridge Scientific Databases that John Saylor is proposing for 519 funding. The cost is $10,000 per year for the suite. Dividing the cost by usage statistics, cost per use was about $1.60. SciTeam will support John's request to DRC if John considers a split between Engineering and 519. If DRC decides against 519 funding, the team will consider dividing the cost among units.
Mary P. also mentioned that the SPIE proceedings has been cancelled for this year. The proceedings may be re-instated for 2002/2003.
Marty Schlabach reviewed the process by which the DRC considers the cancellation of databases. DRC asks periodically whether we are getting our money's worth.
- Merck Index-- Leah mentioned that the Merck Index is being offered online by Cambridge Soft. This system offers structure searching, which the version we already have through Dialog@CARL does not. Cost comparison:
- 13th edition in paper - $60.00
- unlimited campus wide - $5,000.00/year
- two ports - $600.00/year
- CD rom (1 user) - $100.00
Leah will submit a NERF for the version in Dialog and investigate the possibility of local loading of the product. Mary Ochs will raise the question about local loading at the CDExec meeting.
This question of local loading was raised at DRC in the past, but no was action taken. The DRC request form will help decide what questions to ask.

- Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences -- Mary Ochs shared Phil Davis' email regarding the NY Academy of Sciences online publications. NY Academy of Sciences publications will be free online until June 30, 2002. Full text is available from December 1997. Abstracts are available from 1975. Table of contents are available from 1964. Mary will consult with Scott Wicks and Ross Atkinson about getting online access to these publications. It may have implications for the approval plan.
These volumes are now cataloged as monographs. Citations refer to volume #. To find the item in Voyager, it is important to have the title of the volume. Mary Ochs suggested searching in Voyager, "annals york" and volume #.
Past Masters -- Linda Stewart and David Brumberg will make sure that CUL owns all of the materials by Darwin and Sir Robert Boyle and decide if it is worth paying extra to have it online as well.
- Finding Electronic Journals -- Cataloging is working with Serials Solutions to load journals into the online catalog. By fall 2002, 20,000 serials will be in the online catalog. Updates from Serials Solutions [SS] go into the online catalog. The records being created are called SLEEK records. Mary Patterson noted that one cannot rely on the holdings records, as they are not local. In the fall, it will become our database and come from our own catalog. At that point, we should be able to add fields. A field for authority control was suggested.
Leah Solla is the chair of the new E-journals Users Assessment Task Force. Other members of the task force are Kornelia Tancheva, John Saylor, Nancy Holcomb, Nathan Rupp, Tony Cosgrave, and Suzanne Cohen.
- Marty spoke about the new interface for BIOSIS, Agricola, and CAB Abstracts through WebSPIRS. The removal of the telnet version has been greeted with great negativity, but there also have been some positive comments. Access to the Telnet version will cease in March. It would be very expensive to extend the life of the telnet version due to increased subscription costs and the necessity of investing in a new server. The discontent seems to stem from the slowness of the system. There are some technical problems with the system, i.e. trying to search across databases. The group did not know if other databases, i.e. Dissertation Abstracts, will be switched to version 5.0 soon.
Announcements:
- Pat Viele reported that her talk at the American Association of Physics Teachers went well. She reminded everyone of the talk by Marty Blume, chief editor for APS, which is being co-sponsored by the physics department and CUL. Marty will be speaking at 4:40 P.M. on Monday March 25th in Schwartz Auditorium.
- Kizer reported that CU's involvement with the math project may be limited to mirroring the Springer journals. Being a mirror site will give us free access to 20 math journals, some of which we have never received.
- Leah mentioned that she is co-sponsoring an internal grant proposal with the medical school library to provide some joint training.
- David Brumberg announced that he will retire at the end of this year. David suggested that we invite David Corson to attend the SciTeam meetings as David Corson will be the selector for the history of science materials.
- If we find journals that are listed in the online catalog as being full text but really are not, we should notify Libit-l or libgateway-l.
