Science Selection Team Meeting Minutes
September 13, 2002 - Corrected

Attendees:  Leah Solla, Marty Schlabach, Ross Atkinson, John Saylor, Steve Rockey, Phil Davis, Linda Stewart, Susanne Whitaker, Pat Viele, Mary Patterson, Mark Funk (by phone), Mary Ochs (recorder).

  1. ACS Meeting Update (Leah) -- Leah recently returned from the meeting of the American Chemical Society. They will be sticking with their plan to charge an annual fee for access to their archival files for their e-journals. Some of their journal editors thought access to backfiles should be free after the initial purchase, but the governing board felt that it had to be fee-based. Cornell had a free trial over the summer, and the Chemistry faculty would like to obtain a subscription to the archival files. Leah is planning to submit a request to Fund 519. Mark Funk was willing to contribute to the cost of the archive.

C&E News is not in the standard package of ACS journals. The extra charge is $1000 per year for the online.

Leah would like to get unlimited access to SciFinder Scholar. Will continue to negotiate for this.

Leah Solla has been appointed to the CAS Academic Advisory Committee to help them work on access issues to SciFinder Scholar.

  2. General E-journal Update -- Our Wiley contract has one more year. Our contract with Kluwer is up for renewal. Blackwell Publishers and Blackwell Science have merged.

  3. Proteome BioKnowledge Database (Phil) -- Phil has been trying to negotiate for access to this genomics database which used to be free. Having several problems with the license, but major sticking point still left is the need to register as an individual user.

  4. Qatar Medical College Library -- The group discussed how this new extension campus would be treated on Cornell licenses. Publishers may have a problem with registering their IP range as part of the standard Cornell IP ranges. No resolution of this question yet.

  5. ARL Survey on licensing. -- Ross may need assistance from selectors who license resources when he is answering the survey.

  6. Elsevier -- the Science Team discussed the NERL options for the new Elsevier contract and reviewed a cost analysis spreadsheet that Ross presented. The Science Team recommended that Cornell go with the Limited Option, with some reservations from individuals about spending more money for less access. The Library Management Team will be discussing the options and a decision will be made soon.
