Science Selection Team Meeting Minutes
December 13, 2002
Attendees: Mary Ochs, Mary Patterson, Leah Solla, Phil Davis, Pat Viele (recorder), Suzanne Whitaker, Steve Rockey, John Saylor, Linda Stewart, Ross Atkinson, by phone Mark Funk and Marty Schlabach. Guests: Anna Korhonen, Greg Lawrence.
In order to automate the cataloging of new electronic-only resources from the federal government, Anna and Greg propose that CUL buy tapes for those records and load them into the online catalog ASAP. It is very labor intensive for staff to keep track of title changes, changes in format, and new items. The vendor maintains the URL. The cost will be ~ $1300 - 1400/year.
Although this will eliminate the actual selection of an individual item, the science team endorsed the idea. The team also encouraged Anna and Greg to investigate the possibility of retrospective tapes. Anna and Greg will take the suggestion to CD Exec.
BIOMED Central:
CUL has paid up-front fees of about $7500 so that anyone affiliated with Cornell [medical college included] can publish an article in any one of the 60 journals in the collection. Typically, an author would have to pay $500 per article to publish without the institutional subscription.
Phil plans to write an article about this for Mann publications. He will send the draft article to the Science Team. Phil also will get more information on the mechanics of submitting an article to BioMed Central.
Information Sharing:
Leah Solla is planning a retreat for science librarians on January 27 and 28. There will be a special guest speaker and panel discussions. Details to follow.
Phil Davis has been appointed to the library advisory committee for the New England Journal of Medicine.
Pat Viele has been appointed to the committee on graduate student education for the American Association of Physics Teachers.
Science Publishers of Electronic Journals and Cornell University's Current Status for Access
The web site is moving from the engineering library server to the CUL library server. It needs to be up-dated, but that can wait until the move is complete in about two weeks. Phil has volunteered to do the up-dates.
Elsevier:
Ross Atkinson led the discussion:
- Publications of Harcourt Health Science are in scope for CUL. Titles are not 100% on the ScienceDirect platform. We will investigate using HHS titles in the "swap" of Elsevier titles. HHS is part of the Academic Press package. We need to list HHS titles that we have in paper and also want via e-acces. [Note: It turns out that HHS titles cannot be used to substitute for cancelled titles, but we can get access to these titles on Science Direct for a fairly low fee. Mark Funk will coordinate this.]
- Engineering library canceled all Elsevier paper journals, thus saving 7%. Engineering had cut $38K and math $13K.
- Mann and Vet will pool their resources to work the title swap. Math and Engineering will go it alone. The swapped title list needs to be completed by December 17th so that we can notify Elsevier.
- Leah asked about the logistics for paying for the swapped titles. Scott Wicks will be working out the accounting.
- Mark noted that there are several ways of accessing HHS titles. He will check with Teresa Danks ASAP for a list of HHS titles to which we subscribe.
- Cross-access titles will go away in January. Paying the $27K to continue cross access during this transition time was not an option. We will lose access to about 500 e-journals. Ross will compose a letter to go out to all faculty advising them of this development. A central list of which titles are turned off would be handy until CTS can suppress all of the records in Voyager. Mary Patterson is working on this.
- Ross mentioned that we need to start preparing for the 2004 contract now. We need to work with our faculty to educate them about the problem. The letter from the Library will serve several functions:
- educate faculty
- lobby for more money
- encourage faculty to find alternative ways to publish
- prepare faculty for e-only access
