Science Team Minutes

Wed., 8 October, 8:30-10

Present: P Baxter, D Brumberg, S Demas, M Funk (via conference call), M Patterson, S Rockey, J Saylor, J Weintraub, S Whitaker.

  1. Database Review. Among the databases selected for central funding by the CUL Database Review Task Force, only Chemical Abstracts remains to be implemented. Sam and Pam will orchestrate a team process for identifying and assessing the options available.

Based on a discussion of recently completed rankings by team members (compiled by Jen), a number of files of interest to several science libraries (but not all science libraries) were identified. Jen will group the titles by the various library interest groups which emerged through this process and distribute the results to team members. These titles will be consideredfor joint selection/funding by the various groupings of libraries.

A number of files of more general interest (i.e. beyond the Science Team) will be referred to the CUL Database Selection Task force for consideration.

  2. Journal prices and potential cancellation plans for 1999 subscriptions. Discussion of price and budget trends indicates that a majority of the science libraries will be undertaking journal cancellations for subscriptions. There is strong interest in conducting this next round of review for cancellation in one uniform process. It was agreed that this round of cancellation review should have a strong educational, consciousness-raising, and political component designed to stimulate further discussion among the faculty and librarians of the current system and alternatives for the finance of scientific communication.

  3. Cornell Primary Collecting Responsibility (CPCR) An assessment of the status of the team's work in this area indicates that the following remains to be done:
    a. record cpcr's in Filemaker Database for G's, QM, QP, R's, S's
     and T's.
    b. Resolve (either by adding explanatory notes or clarifation
between selectors) dual cpcr's currently recorded for 57 of the
nearly 1,000 LC Classification numbers in the team's purview.

These tasks will be completed by the responsible libraries, with consultations as necessary, and recorded in the database by the library with the cpcr by the December 10 meeting. At that time there will be a final reviw of the total cpcr data for the team.

John will send team members instructions for accessing the database.

  4. ISI Local Journal Utilization Report The file will be made available to all selectors. Team members will keep the team informed of their use of the data.

Minutes recorded by Sam Demas.
