Science Team Minutes 1/14/98

Present: Demas, Funk (via conference phone), Rockey, Patterson, Saylor

1. Electronic Journals. We discussed recent developments in journal pricing and the conversations of various library groups with Elsevier. Also discussed local initiatives and strategies, including Mann's journal price study of core ag and bio journals and attendant faculty deliberations.

2. Science Team Silver Platter Contract Update. The Silver Platter databases selected will be available on the Library Gateway next Monday, except for Energy and Zoological Record. Both these are not yet available via the web from SilverPlatter. Mann Library will make ZR available on its LAN until it is available via the Web; Engineering Library will work with LTD to get the Energy CDROMS mounted for network access and will provide temporary local access if necessary.

3. Chemical Abstracts. John Saylor will follow up on the question of securing access to either the Chemical Abstracts 13th collective index or the entire database, depending on options available.

4. Approval Plan Funding. We discussed the possibility of changing the mechanism of funding the science approval plan and will revisit the question in a future meeting.

5. CU Medical/CUL Ithaca Collaboration. We discussed various ideas and have narrowed it down to two: videoconferencing technology and a collection evaluation study.

6. Meeting schedule. We will meet the second Wednesday of each month, 8:15-9:45. The next meeting will be Feb. 11.
