Science Team Meeting
10/15/99
Attending: Steve Rockey, David Brumberg, Pat Viele, Jean Poland, Susanne Whitaker, John Saylor, Mark Funk (by phone), Linda Stewart, Mary Ochs (recorder)
- Springer E-journals -- Springer has offered access to all of their journals (including those that Cornell does not currently have in print) for a fixed price. They are looking for a few large libraries to test the system. Many of the titles are medical titles. The team decided that it was not interested in pursuing the deal. The team did not feel that the value of the journals to the Cornell Community was worth the price.
- ACS E-journals -- Jean distributed the list of ACS titles to which Cornell curretly subscribes. The estimate for the additional charge beyond what we currently pay is $6,917. NERL also is working on an ACS deal, but it may not decrease Cornell's costs significantly. ACS allows cancellation of duplicate print subscriptions, but does not reimburse the full cost. Jean will let ACS know that we are interested. The cost will be divided among the team libraries based on the titles held by each library.
The team came up with a general principle for cost sharing for e-journals: If 2 or more libraries have a duplicate copy of a print journal, the e-journal subscription cost will be shared equally by all libraries owning the journal, with one library maintaining the paper archival copy. If more than one library wants to keep the paper, this decision can be discussed among the libraries.
- Elsevier -- Team members who had looked at the Yale Elsevier trial thought it worked well. Mary noted that the web page with the subject breakdown for the journals does not include bio & ag, but the important bio & ag journals are in the system, if you search for them by title. The url for the system is:
http://temp-copy2.its.yale.edu:8080/
Team members who have not looked at the system should do so asap. John talked to Ross on 10/19 and Ross said we should have the pricing info from NERL very soon.
- NetLibrary -- The team discussed the methodology for selecting ebooks for the NetLibrary service. The team decided to break the selection down by library, with each of the following choosing 10 books for the Science Team total of 50: Vet/Med, Engineering, Math, Physical Sciences, and Mann. Selectors will look at circulation figures to try to pick things that have been checked out many times. Selections should be sent to the Science team listserv. John has sent out the spreadsheet with the list of titles.
- Current Contents -- Susan Barnes has arranged for a trial of Current Contents Direct. The trial will run from 10/27 to 11/23 and will include all Cornell IP addresses including Med and Extension. The price for all 7 editions is $24,388 and $21,980 for just the science editions. The Database Review Committee will also be evaluating CC. Suzanne Cohen has created a comparison chart of several of the current awareness services. Mary will send this out to the Science Team.
- Academic IDEAL -- Academic has offered the 93-95 backfiles for $13,774. The team wondered about Academic’s archiving policy. John will investigate the price for the 96-97 journals to fill the gap between our current holdings (98-) and the 93-95 backfile. Mary will find our original formula for dividing the Academic cost and distribute it with the minutes (see below).
- Info and Announcements:
- Next meeting is 11/12, Math Library
- Jean Poland is investigating the possibility of serving as a mirror site for ejournals for the American Physics Society. This brings up the need to address our electronic archiving responsibilities.
- John Saylor -- Eng Lib will most likely be serving as a partner with IEEE to provide electronic access to all IEEE journals and Conference Proceedings back from 1988 to present starting in January 2000.
-
Pat Viele will give a brown bag lunch to discuss the conference on Grey Literature which she attended.
- Steve asked if anyone had investigated ejournals made available in Postscript form. Many math journals appear in this format. The ERC may need to discuss this issue in order for kiosks to be equipped with a viewer for Postscript files.
- Mark Funk pointed members to the National Academy of Science web site, where they present use statistics on their ejournals.
