Social Science Selectors Team Meeting
January 15, 2001
Present: Pam Baxter, Michael Cook, Phil Dankert, Michael Engle, Constance Finlay, Janie Harris, Gregory Lawrence, Julie Stiles.
Note, for all selectors: Phil clarified this with Ross at CD-EXEC. It can be anything; electronic titles, serials, microform sets. ("anything that is compelling."). He needs this information by Feb. 1, 2001.
- Michael Cook provided an update on Mann Library collection policy concerning social welfare practice. The Human Service Studies Program in the College of Human Ecology has been absorbed by the Policy Analysis and Management Department (PAM). The social work program at PAM ceased in May of 2000. According to the liaison that Michael spoke with, there has been a shift away from a human services focus to an emphasis on management (especially economic). Most PAM majors now enter business or MBA or Law school. As described in the CPCR, Mann has a responsibility for collecting in HV 40 - HV 69. Michael indicated Mann will stop actively collecting clinical social work in these areas. A short discussion followed.
- The pre-shelving plan was briefly discussed. Some Team members noted that mis-assignments were very frustrating and appear to be increasing. Phil agreed to check with Ross about when the program would end.
- SourceOECD was discussed. SourceOECD is a new distribution program available from OECD. For a set fee ( $15, 400 annually for Cornell), we would get a copy of each print publication plus 5 concurrent user ports to the digital monographs, periodicals and databases. Several Team members felt SourceOECD was an important resource to have at CUL. Janie noted that before this could be a DRC issue, but currrent expenditures shoud be reviewed and some libraries might cancel duplicate subscriptions. Janie agreed to photocopy the latest 12 months of invoices for OECD publications to measure the possible savings.
- Michael Engle spoke with the Team about acquiring WWW access to ISI Journal Citation Reports. He noted that Mann collects the Science JCR in microfiche and that junior faculty have been asking for the type of information contained in JCR. Purchase through NERL rate is:
- WWW:
$ 3600 per year for either Science or Social Sciences, plus a $750 access fee.
$ 5950 per year for combined access, plus a $750 access fee.
- CD
$ 1800 per year for either Science or Social Sciences
Michael asked the selectors about the preferred format (among print, microfiche, CD-ROM, and networked.) His own preference is for the networked version because it would be available anywhere. There was a question about whether the CDs are cumulative ( Michael doesn't believe so) and whether one can search across years in the networked form ( Michael didn't know). He said he would contact Scott Bard at ISI for more information and ask him for trial access.
