MyContents Update:
Suzanne Cohen reported on the status of My Contents. The Vet School is working toward launch of the beta test, with a target of late January. Library staff are encouraged to review the MyContents project web site at http://adam.mannlib.cornell.edu:8080/mycontents/ender.do. (Sidecar is required).
Greg Lawrence reviewed the project, which began 18 months ago. (At that time, selectors expressed an interest in the ISI TOC because it provided abstracts along with the bibliographic citation.) However, ISI will not be able to provide links to full text, a feature only available through its Web of Science / Web of Knowledge. If alumni access were provided, it would be with significant additional cost. ISI would also make no commitment to maintaining a stand-alone TOC service past 1 year. ISI will submit a proposal for 500 TOC at $12/title, with no DOI or embedded URL. A list of TOC titles is at http://www.isinet.com/isi/journals/index.html.
Ingenta said that the ability to link full text using an embedded URL in their TOC may already be available; Greg will run a test with ten titles for which we have online subscriptions.. Ingenta views its TOC product as a long-term service. Although they would not commit to alumni access, they expressed an interest in the proposal. Ingenta will also investigate the copyright implications of CUL acting as a redistributor to the campus and/or alumni. Their price quote was $10/title, and to prevent a rate increase, CUL has asked for a three-year lock-in rate. A list of TOC titles is at www.ingenta.com (select “Browse Publications”).
Suzanne suggested that an expanded My Contents has the potential of being a high-profile service with a wide constituency. The My Contents development group’s meetings are open to visitors, and it invites CUL staff to suggest other TOC vendors that should be considered. Phil observed that, based on his sample of about 100 titles, coverage of social science titles is much better in ISI. To the acclaim of his assembled colleagues, Phil volunteered to be the liaison between the My Contents development team and the social science selectors.
In response to a question, Greg mentioned that there's no single master list of titles that has been selected by CUL units, although there are four lists of titles selected by Vet, ILR, Mann, and Engineering. The current TOC system lists about 300 titles, although the goal is to increase this to more than 1000 with the next release of My Contents. Anticipated launch of campus-wide TOC service is the end of Spring 2002 term. Suzanne mentioned that it is a long-term goal to use the links from the CU catalog to journal titles for use in the TOC service. Janie asked what use statistics would be supplied by the vendors. Greg replied that statistics on use would be generated locally.
OECD Update:
Julie provided updates on OECD receipts: Titles have been arriving of both retrospective and current materials. For example, OECD has promised shipment of publications from 2000 not previously received. Periodical receipts have managed to keep pace. She asked for feedback about how or if people are using SourceOECD. Don mentioned that JGSM is canceling paper subscriptions, more than half of which are duplicates. Janie asked about the disposition of OECD monographic items that are on the second-week shelf. What happens to them if they’re not tagged by selectors? She asked that there be some followup of items that are received but not selected. Julie will make inquiries. [Julie later reported that David Block reviews any monographic series items which are not selected and selects them for appropriate libraries.]
Depository Library Conference:
Julie summarized highlights from the recent Depository Library Conference. These included the following:
Global Market Information Database:
Don discussed Euromonitor’s Global Market Information Database, which is at the top of JGSM’s wish list of purchases. He distributed a list of the components. The first six (Marketing Parameters, Consumer Market Sizes, Forecasts, Companies and Brands, Information Sources, and Major Market Profiles,) would cost $14,400 for a Cornell site license. The Market Analysis component would cost $20,000. Purchasing components individually would make the per-component cost prohibitive. He emphasized that Global Market Information Database would complement current EIU databases in e-Reference by focusing on consumers and brands at a micro level. He’s had several other inquiries from market research firms interested in a piece of the academic market, such as Forester Research, JUPITER, and Mintel. There was general discussion about other market-research products in the e-Reference collection, such as MarketResearch.com and Sports Business Research Network.
Announcements:
Phil:
(1) ILR is an ILO depository library, one of two in the country (the other being LC).
(2) Networked Sage journals are available for a free trial; see www.sagepub.co.uk/freeaccess for details. Many of these titles should already be available via Ingenta or other vendors.
Charlie:
He forwarded information about campus-wide Westlaw access to David Block. This arrangement specifically excludes the Law School, but he brought it forward with the thought that others on campus would find it useful. Information about the service is located at http://www.westlawcampus.com/ . He has a password if anyone wants to test it out.
Julie:
Olin has obtained a microfilm collection of 1899-1933 Congressional bills from LC to fill a gap in its collection.
Janie:
The New York State Data Center has cautioned affiliates that the Census 2000 Supplemental Survey (C2SS) data should be used with care and not confused with 2000 decennial census data.
Don:
JGSM has finished its book move: 25,000 volumes to the Annex and 2500 duplicate titles to Olin for withdrawal..
