Social Sciences Team Meeting

December 7, 1999

Present: Phil Dankert, Janie Harris, Sarah How, Susan Greaves, Martha Hsu, Greg Lawrence, Katie Margolis, Brenda Marston, Susan Palmer, Don Schendecker, Julie Stiles, Bill Walthers, Ross Atkinson, Caroline Spicer.

  1. Academic IDEAL Renewal - Ross discussed the IDEAL renewal with the Team. CUL access to IDEAL is purchased through NERL, and the contract uses a complex formula for fixing the annual subscription rate. The current contract requires a title by title review to determine the final cost for both paper and electronic access. For titles selected by Social Science Team members, Ross will contribute the difference in subscription cost for this fiscal year. This is the final year in the current contract and a new contract will be negotiated next year. Ross was asked to provide more detailed information to all selectors when the next contract is negotiated.
Also, it was urged that CUL advise faculty about the cost of the contract and its implications for the system.

  2. Sarah and Caroline discussed the CRL membership survey with the Team. Significant fact-finding has been preformed earlier, and this discussion focused on gathering anecdotal information about CRL use. Several observations were generated during the discussion. The CRL collection suffers from poor visibility in either NOTIS or the Library Gateway, many Team members were unaware of CRL content, and the CRL collection needs more promotion to staff and patrons.

  3. E-books. Greg provided the Team with an update on the ebooks project.

Announcements:

Janie - the Database Resource Committee has asked to meet with Ross to discuss its role. In light of the many electronic purchases and contract decisions, the Committee is seeking clarification concerning its responsibilities.

Bill - announced he is leaving Cornell in January to take a position as the first Collection Development librarian at St. Lawrence University.

Julie - announced that GPO's delivery problems were causing batch shipments of documents to arrive. She noted they went without a delivery for two weeks and then received numerous boxes. Until GPO renews its contract in mid-year, it's likely this situation will persist.

Don - the Johnson School Library has cancelled Laser Disc-losure and will rely on web access via Global Access, which is available on the Gateway. He indicated this was a conscience decision to move away from local holdings and relying on the Internet. He also announced the renewal of CorpuStat NorthAmerica, which has been upgraded to allow software installation on any workstation across campus. Also, the contract for DataStream is due for renewal and Don will be speaking with selectors about continued support. Finally, with the support of Hotel, Kalorama has been made available for the entire campus.

Minutes prepared by Greg Lawrence
