1) Digitization and digital library project review
Oya Rieger, Interim Assistant University Librarian for Digital Library and Information Technologies (DLIT), and Jon Corson-Rikert, Head, Information Technology Services at Mann Library, each presented information about their units' programs and staffing, projects, and operating principles, and gave a few of examples of projects that reflect these principles. The slides from their presentation are available at < http://wiki.library.cornell.edu/wiki/download/attachments/49017/LMT+Presentation1.ppt?version=1 > Of particular note is the growing collaboration between the DLIT and ITS, reflected most clearly in the Large Scale Digitization Intiative. Anne thanked Oya and Jon for providing this useful background information and said that the next step is to: 1) define responsibilites, both technical and curatorial, for the digital collections we are creating, 2) look at resource implications, including management of the collections over time, and 3) consider needs for IT that are not being provided by DLIT or ITS. She asked Oya and Jon to develop a set of recommendations addressing these issues. Anne also reported that Cliff Lynch, the Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information, will visit Cornell on July 16 to help us think through information technology issues including the positioning of the library within the broader information technology landscape within the university.
2) VIVO+: Annual reporting
VIVO < http://vivo.library.cornell.edu/> the Virtual Life Sciences Library, brings together in one site library resources along with information about facilities, courses, faculty, departments, undergraduate majors, and graduate fields that support the Cornell New Life Sciences Initiative. The VIVO database is currently being augmented as part of the VIVO+ project to provide similar content for the social sciences, engineering, physical sciences, international activities, and potentially other areas. LMT endorsed a recommendation prepared by members of the VIVO+ steering committee for library academic and professional staff to self-report annually into VIVO+. The goal of this reporting is to tie the library into the academic life of the university and to foster library-faculty collaborations by making information about the professional skills and subject expertise of the library staff more visible. Library staff will participate in a pilot project to enter information directly in the VIVO+ interface this fall. This will be discussed further at the June 13 Council of Librarians meeting.
