Library Management Team
Notes from the December 11, 2002 Meeting

Attending: Ross Atkinson, Lee Cartmill, Claire Germain, Tom Hickerson, Anne Kenney, Janet McCue, Jean Poland, Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman

1) Copyright Royalties for e-Reserve
LMT concluded, based on a review of policies and practices at other institutions and pending further clarification of this issue, that the Library should continue its current policies with regard to the seeking copyright clearance and the payment of royalties for e-reserve material.  Sarah will confer with Pat McClary to make sure that the Counsel's office supports this decision.

2) National Science Digital Library (NSDL)
Jean and Janet reported on the National Science Digital Library project.  After describing the goals of the project, they speculated about possible outcomes from this project and their impact on the Library:  a) NSDL becomes another science "resource" like a science encyclopedia or Web of Science with minimal impact on how the Library does its business; b) NSDL transforms scholarly communications and serves as a catalyst for other things, e.g., a pre-print archive, transforming, how the Library does business; and, c) NSDL becomes a national science library.  The outcome is uncertain but Janet and Jean recommended that the Library collaborate actively with NSDL.  This means helping to formulate upcoming NSDL proposals, looking at sustainability (e.g., digital archiving issues), and providing feedback as to how NSDL will work in the context of a large research library.  In addition, it is important that the Library makes sure that the University understands that the Library is responding to the digital environment and utilizing technology to enhance learning, teaching and research.
