Notes from the September 3, 2003 Meeting

Attending: Ross Atkinson, Karen Calhoun, Lee Cartmill, Claire Germain, Anne Kenney, Janet McCue, Jean Poland, Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman

1)  Technical Services Review, Phase 2
Karen presented a report and recommendations for phase 2 of the CUL technical services review on behalf of the CUL Technical Services Review Group which she chaired.  Other members of the group are Bill Kara, Margaret Nichols, Jean Pajerek and Scott Wicks.  LMT discussed the recommendations and accepted the report requesting 1) a modification to the format, 2) a change to one of the impact sections, and 3) the undertaking of a review of all existing exchange programs and also of the gift acceptance policies at other institutions with the goal of developing a more restrictive CUL gift acceptance policy.

2) Criteria for being a CUL Unit
In response to the decision to make the Library in the Laboratory of Ornithology a CUL unit and to a request from another Cornell library to become part of CUL, LMT reviewed a draft set of criteria for being a CUL unit.  Among the issues discussed were requirements for collections, the distinction between satellite service points affiliated with CUL units and unit libraries, and the type of staffing required.  LMT will continue this discussion at an upcoming meeting.

3) National Digital Information Infrastructure & Preservation Program (NDIIPP)
Sarah reported that she received several ideas for proposals to the Library of Congress' National Digital Information Infrastructure & Preservation Program from members of LMT.  In addition, the New York State Higher Education Initiative (NYSHEI) is soliciting interest in a collaborative proposal involving key ARL libraries in New York State, with the participation of other New York State colleges, universities and digital content holders, to create a major node in this evolving national infrastructure.  Anne and Tom will consider whether Cornell should express interest in participating in this NYSHEI proposal.
