Library Management Team
Notes from the January 7, 2004 Meeting

Attending: Ross Atkinson, Karen Calhoun, Lee Cartmill, Tom Hickerson, Janet McCue, Jean Poland, Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman

1) Announcements
Ross stated his intention to form a small Task Force to look into the implications of the open access model for the Library.  Open access means the free availability of literature on the public internet, permitting users to read, download, copy, or use it for any other lawful purpose, without charge.
Janet announced that Jacalyn Spoon will be the library administrator for the Laboratory of Ornithology Library, the newest unit of the Cornell University Library.  Jacalyn will begin work on January 19 at which time the Library will open its doors to the public.  The Library will be part of the Life Sciences cluster.
Janet also announced that Mann Library has commissioned a sculpture by Roberto Bertoia, chair of the Art Department, in memory of Tom Turner.  She hopes to dedicate the memorial in March.

2) Development in planning for facilities
LMT heard reports on library facilities plans and plans from outside the Library that do or could affect library space.  These include:
a) Facilities at the Geneva Experiment Station are being looked at.  It is not clear whether any changes that might be planned will affect Library space.
b) The Vet Library recently created a video viewing area.  A study of the HVAC system in the Vet Library turned up problems which will need to be addressed.
c) The renovation of the original Mann Library building got underway in November.  The renovation is expected to take 36 months to complete.
d) The Hotel School will be making changes to the stairway in the Atrium outside the Library entrance.  This will probably not affect library space.  The Beck Center Building Expansion Project, the 35,000-square-foot teaching facility, being constructed on the east side of Statler Hall, may have some small effect on Hotel Library space.
e) The third floor of the ILR Library is still being occupied by faculty and students until other construction at the ILR School is completed.  When the space becomes available again next year, stacks will be installed.
f) The sprinkler system in Kroch RMC has been a problem for the last couple of years.  The Library is working to get this problem fixed.
g) Digitization staff in D-CAPS are relocating into RMC temporarily as additional space is being sought for the digitization service..
h)The Wireless hub has been relocated in the Math Library to provide better coverage.  New soft seating has been added.
i) The Board of Trustees has approved in concept an addition to Clark Hall, or a new building between Clark and Baker halls, as part of the life sciences initiative.  There are no specific building plans at this time.  The impact on the Physical Sciences Library is not yet known.  In the meantime, the new flooring in the Physical Sciences Library is being extended.
j) Planning is underway for the renovation of Carpenter Hall.  This will impact the Engineering Library.  The Library and the ACCEL Computing Facility will be more unified in the new design.  The CIT computer lab in the basement of Carpenter will be "taken over" by the Library and the work stations incorporated within the Library.  The Library will have a unified service desk.  The Library may be providing space for four computer support staff being relocated from elsewhere in Carpenter to make room for four new College fund raising staff.
k) Duffield Hall is expected to open in May.  EMPSL would like to obtain some space in Duffield to provide at least a kiosk and a home for outreach.
l) The Africana building project is moving forward.  The Africana Library will add 600 square feet to the 2070 square feet it now occupies and it will have more prominent space in the redesigned facility.
m) The Millstein Building project is "on hold" in the College of Architecture, Art and Planning.  When the project starts up, the need for surge space will most likely require the relocation of materials now housed in the Library.
n) The University has authorized schematic design for the first phase of the Olin Library renovation, involving floors 3-8.  This will result in new HVAC and life safety systems and improved carrels, studies and public space.  A review of options to correct problems with the building facade is also included.  A second phase of this project, which has not yet been approved, involves the renovation of floors B-2, including, possibly, a connector to Uris Library.  The renovation of Uris Library would constitute a third phase of the project.
o) Sarah will be meeting with the Capital Funding and Priorities Committee (CF&PC) in February to seek approval for at least one new module for the Library Annex.  University architects suggested that it might be most cost effective to use all the space available on the site and build three additional modules now instead of one at a time.  If CF&PC approves the project in February, the next module will most likely be available in the summer of 2005.
p) The Library continues to explore the possibility of building a Library Service Center in the developing areas of campus.
