Sarah welcomed Pat Court and
announced that she would be attending
LMT meetings during the periods over the next six months when Claire
Germain was away from campus on a sabbatic leave.
Ross reported that the
Internet-First University Press has
published its first manuscript: Enrico Fermi: The Master Scientist by Jay
Orear of Cornell's Laboratory of Elementary-Particle Physics. The
manuscript is freely available from the Internet-First University Press
repository within DSpace at Cornell
<http://dsapce.library.cornell.edu/handle/1813/62>
and is available on an
open access basis. Printed and bound versions may be purchased through
Cornell Business Services.
Anne said that it appears
likely that the Africana Library will
have to relocate from the Africana Studies Center while the Center is
undergoing renovations and expansion later this year. Options for
accommodating the Africana Library collections and services are being
considered.
Lee reported that Vice Provost
Walter Cohen and Richard Feldman ,
director of the Language Media Center, will be visiting Olin and Uris
libraries to check out possible locations for the Language Media Center,
which is moving out of Noyes Lodge. LMT briefly discussed possible
synergies with the Library's media services.
Tom announced that President
Jeffrey Lehman will be attending the
opening reception for the new exhibit, Pastimes and Paradigms: Games We
Play at the Hirshland Exhibition Gallery in Kroch Library on February 5
between 4:30 and 5:00 pm. All staff are invited to attend.
President
Lehman will also be attending the Academic Assembly meeting that
morning. Tom also announced that the Race and Religion Web
site was in
production. Kornelia Tancheva spearheaded the intensive effort to develop
and make the Web site available for courses being offered this semester.
Karen reported that the last
set of cards in the Mellon funded
retrospective conversion project to complete the conversion the Library's
LC classified shelflist were shipped to OCLC last week. The project will
be completed well ahead of schedule. With Mellon's approval, we hope to
use money left over to convert records for rare and medium rare titles from
the Area and Harris collections. Sarah thanked Karen and the staff
working
on this project for their efforts.
Janet announced that Phil
Davis will be highlighted in the March
15 issue of Library Journal as a +"mover and shaker."
2) Digital Consulting and Production Services (DCAPS) Goals and Objectives
and the DCAPS Business Plan
Tom Hickerson presented an
abbreviated version of a presentation
on DCAPS that he made at the December 9, 2003 Coalition for Networked
Information meeting. The presentation, which is available at
<http://www.library.cornell.edu/dcaps/presentations/CNI_DCAPS.ppt>
covered
the DCAPS service, operational and business models and addressed innovative
aspects, challenges and future developments. Tom also presented
production
and income figures and projections for DCAPS digital image production
operation. Tom emphasized that the Library has created DCAPS not simply as
a business operation but to serve as a "catalyst" for increasing the
amount
and scope of scholarly information available online and for building
digital collections of enduring value to enhance learning, teaching and
research. Sarah emphasized that she wants to ensure that images created
by
the digital image production operation are integrated into the Library's
digital collections.
3) Response to Lehman's Call For Engagement
LMT discussed the strategy for
responding to President Lehman's
Call For Engagement questions. Ross and Ed will draft a "high
level"
Library response, taking into account contributions made by the staff at
the forum on January 26 and on the Web site set up by the Professional
Development Committee.
<http://www.library.cornell.edu/pdc/engagement/>
Members of LMT will
review this draft and also can append responses from their units and
divisions. Lastly, Library staff should be encouraged to submit
individual
responses to one or more of the questions by e-mail directly to
<<mailto:calltoengagement@cornell.edu>calltoengagement@cornell.edu>.
