Library
Management Team
Notes from the June 16, 2004 Meeting
Attending: Karen Calhoun, Lee Cartmill, Pat Court, Tom Hickerson,
Anne Kenney, Janet McCue, Jean Poland, Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman
1) Announcements
Sarah reported
briefly about the contract signing ceremony at the Huntington Free Library in
New York City yesterday. This event, which was reported in today's New
York Times Metro Section (p. B6) gives Cornell ownership of the Huntington's
historic Native American collection of books and manuscripts.
Sarah also
reported that, based on further discussions with university administrators,
planning would again get under way to incorporate the Language Lab into space
within either Olin or Uris library.
Anne announced
that effective July 1, David Wyatt, emeritus professor in the History
Department, will serve as the interim curator of the Echols Collection on a
part-time basis.
Pat Court
announced that the Law School is creating a technology position that will be
designated primarily to supporting Law Library needs.
2) LARIS Workforce Planning
LMT discussed
the process to be used to plan for and implement a fully integrated but
distributed technical services operation for the Library. In May the
Workforce Planning Oversight Team led by Vice President Ainslie endorsed a
recommendation that the Library integrate its technical services operations
into a unified function that will result in clear direction, efficiencies, and
savings. At Sarah's request, Karen has developed a scenario that
envisions centralization of responsibilities for ordering print monographs and
for their processing, and a combination of centralized and distributed
work for other aspects of technical services. LMT discussed Karen's
scenario and a draft charge for the planning and implementation team that is
being formed. Karen will review the scenario with the Technical Services
Executive Group this afternoon.
3) Campaign planning
Sarah reported
on planning for the University's upcoming fund-raising campaign. She
attended an all-day retreat on June 8 in which themes for the campaign were
discussed.
4) Managing without Ross
Sarah announced
the distribution of Ross' responsibilities during his leave of
absence. She will distribute the list of assignments in a message to
CU-LIB.
