Notes from April 27, 2005 Meeting
Attending: Ross Atkinson,
Lee Cartmill, Claire Germain, Anne Kenney, Janet McCue, Jean Poland, Carolyn
Reid (via phone), Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman
Guest: Oya Rieger
1) Announcements
Anne announced that the walls are up for the new high density storage modules
at the Annex and that the target date for the completion of the construction
is October 15. Students will begin working in June to get ready for the transfer
of materials in the fall.
Janet announced that she and Anne had attended a meeting with CIT and "environmentally
conscious" students on duplex printing. CIT now supports duplex printing
through Netprint but only with Xerox printers. All the printers in Olin and
Uris are HP's but one Xerox printer will be installed in both Uris and Olin
to test this process. Mann Library is already testing the duplex printing
option. The Library will be offering duplex printing at an introductory rate
of $08 per image to encourage students to use this option leading, hopefully,
to the consumption of less paper.
2) CIT/CUL Initiative
Oya Rieger presented a proposal from the Digital Synergies Working Group,
a CUL/CIT committee, for a joint CIT/CUL initiative to "create a unified
service model for the delivery of digital solutions to the Cornell community."
This proposal grew out of an agreement between LMT and CIT administrators
last year to try to"come up with a 'common front door' for the Cornell
community's service requests and to develop a map to current services and
providers [in order] to enhance understanding of prospective services between
the two organizations." LMT agreed to support the initiative for one
year but specified that the initial focus be on instruction and that the planning
group be expanded to include someone in the Library involved in instruction.
LMT will review the progress on this initiative over the course of the coming
year .
3)
Weill Cornell Distributed e-Library in Qatar
During Sarah's recent visit to Qatar, Jane Lindley, the Director of the Weill
Cornell Distributed e-Library in Qatar, expressed her interest in having the
e-Library become CUL's 21st unit. LMT discussed several issues associated
with this, such as where the e-Library might fit within CUL's administrative
framework, reviewed the e-Library's relationship with the Weill Cornell Medical
College Library in New York, and discussed the planned development of "the
multi–institutional Education City, a campus dedicated to education, research
and technology" near Doha, Qatar. Sarah said she would be seeking additional
information from Jane Lindley and also gather more information information
about plans for Education City.
