1) Announcements
a) Sarah reported on the recent Dean's meeting in which the Cornell fund-raising campaign was discussed. Sarah said that it was important that the Library share its campaign goals with the deans and that we make sure they understand how the Library's fund-raising goals relate to university and college priorities. Sarah shared the theme of the Library's scholarly communications faculty "campaign" with the deans: "Pick Your Publisher, Keep Your Copyright, Save Your Stuff ... in DSpace." This was received favorably.
b) Tom reported that a joint CIT-CUL group that is looking into integrating library services into BlackBoard and has met several times. A pilot project core group has also been established including from the Library Jesse Koennecke, Marty Kurth and Tony Cosgrave. Sarah and Polley McClure are serving as project sponsors. Tom and Jim Lombardi, Director for Startegic Priorities of the Office of Information Technologies, are serving as project directors.
c) Sarah announced that Mary Beth Bunge was resigning as Library Communications director in early January. A review of the position responsibilities will take place before the position is reposted. Sarah asked Claire to recommend a new chair for Priority Implementation Team #4 (Effectively market the Library's products and services and expand outreach and communication to new and underrepresented constituencies.)
2) The prospective service formerly known as Cornucopia
Xin Li, Director, Service Innovations and Resource Planning in IRIS, has been leading a project team consisting of Barbara Berger-Eden, Peter Hirtle, Pat Schafer and Ed Weissman to identify a set of innovative services that the Cornell University Library might offer to libraries in New York State. Building on the findings of the MAS 2010 project, the team drafted a service model and is seeking feedback. This will be on the agenda of the December 19 Council of Librarians meeting and will be discussed with other Library groups and committees. Based at the Library Annex, the service offerings in the draft plan include among other things the storage and expedited delivery in print or digital format of the collaboratively owned print materials from libraries across New York State that are housed at the Annex as well as from CUL collections on campus, the creation of a "dark archive," and digitization/print/preservation on demand. Claire reported that law libraries in the northeast are considering the creation of a dark archive for legal materials and Sarah said that she has been contacted about creating a regional JSTOR archive, both of which might be incorporated into the planning.
