Library Management Team
Notes from February 15, 2006 Meeting
Attending: Karen Calhoun, Lee Cartmill, Claire Germain, Tom Hickerson, Anne Kenney, Janet McCue, Jean Poland, Sarah Thomas, Ed Weissman.
1) Announcements
Tom reported on discussions he has had with Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, to create a database consisting of the four million pre-1976 US patents. The goal of this "patents initiative" is to support the "exploration of innovation." This might involve a joint Sigma Xi-Cornell National Science Digital Library (NSDL) pathway proposal. The database would be available on an open access basis.
2) Library Priorities
The Library Management Team discussed the Library's priorities in the context of staff workload, personnel changes and the progress made by the priority objectives implementation teams as the teams near the end of their first year of work on the nine priority objectives. The original nine teams will soon be eight, with the merging of the IT#7 (Operate an electronic publishing program capable of systematic production and distribution of journals, monographs, and multimedia compositions and foster alternatives to conventional publishing) and IT#8 (Develop within the Library and the University a shared vision of the future of scholarly communication; identify and undertake actions that will demonstrably contribute to the realization of that vision.) In April, LMT will review what has been accomplished by the teams and what remains to be done. This review will be based on the status reports of each team, a meeting with the team leaders, and a review of the library's goals for 2006-2007.
