Library Email Distribution Lists
(Mailing Lists)
A mailing list offers a means of communicating electronically with a collection of people through a single email address. Whenever someone sends an email message to a mailing list address, that message goes out to everyone subscribed to the list. Participation in electronic mailing lists at Cornell costs nothing; there are no subscription fees of any sort. Anyone who has access to email (such as Eudora and the Cornell campus network) can take advantage of the service. Some mailing lists are "restricted" to members of a particular department or process, while others are open to everyone. Once you know the name of a mailing list that interests you, joining it is easy: just send a join command. When sending a subscribe command, you need to tell Lyris the name of the list you want to join and your name. For example, if you want to subscribe to CATALOGERS-L, you would send an email to CATALOGERS-L-request@cornell.edu with the message join. It's not necessary to put anything in the Subject line of the email. A short time after sending this message, you may receive a confirmation request. Follow the instructions in the request (which involves replying to the message or clicking on a web link). The confirmation process helps ensure that only people who want to join a list receive the list's messages. For more information about joining a list, visit CIT's Joining an E-List website. When you want to leave a list for any reason, you must unsubscribe from it. When sending a leave command, you need to tell Lyris the name of the list you want to leave. For example, if you had joined the CATALOGERS-L list, you would send an email to CATALOGERS-L-request@cornell.edu with the message leave. It's not necessary to put anything in the Subject line of the email. A short time after sending this message, you may receive a confirmation request. Follow the instructions in the request (which involves replying to the message or clicking on a web link). The confirmation process helps ensure that only valid requests to leave are processed. For more information about leaving a list, visit CIT's Leaving an E-List website. To participate in a list you simply send an email message to the mailing list's address. All Cornell mailing list addresses follow the format LISTNAME@cornell.edu. Be sure to include the hyphen and the letter L at the end of the list name. In this example, it's CATALOGERS-L@cornell.edu, not CATALOGERS@cornell.edu. (Please note that for CU-LIB there is no "L" in the list name, and thus this rule does not apply when posting to the CU-LIB list.) Important: your email will be broadcast to all list subscribers! Your message should relate to the purpose of the list. You should complete the Subject line of your message as you would if sending the mail to an individual. Write your message in the email body, and send it off. There are many ways to manage your mailing list memberships, obtain information about lists, change the way you receive list emails, and so on. For more information, visit CIT's Using E-Lists at Cornell website.
