Help : Technical Support : Resolve Errors and Technical Questions: Linking to library resourcesPlease note that off-campus access to library licensed resources is restricted to current students, employees and faculty with NetIDs. Those with GuestIDs will not have access. This should be the only major restriction to linking directly to Library licensed resources. By and large, instructors can assume that if the Library has a database or journal available in electronic form, they can point to it or articles within it for class. The library always tries to secure the rights to use material in the classroom when negotiating licenses. (Harvard Business School publications are the one major exception to this rule. Even though they are available electronically through the library, they cannot be used in classes without additional permission. This limitation is clearly indicated on each article.) However, providing actual copies of articles by printing them out or putting PDFs or other electronic documents on a Blackboard site for download rather than making direct links to the articles within the licensed database or journal is another matter. Check the terms of use on the journal’s web site or the About Resource button under Find E-Journals on the Library Gateway to look up the general license terms for an individual title or database. It is important to note that the information in the “About Resource” button is for all titles from the supplier of the electronic copy. Individual journals or even individual articles may have more restrictive or more generous policies; check the “Terms and Conditions” section of any electronic journal as well as the copyright notice on an individual article to see if they include permission to include articles on course web sites, in the course reserve system, or in course packs without having to pay additional permission. However, directly linking to articles within the licensed database or journal (except for Harvard Business School publications) is often the surest way to include them without the need for additional permission. Cornell-restricted databases and e-journals You can bookmark or link to databases and e-journals, but because of the authentication process necessary to access restricted resources, to identify yourself as a Cornell user from a computer outside the Cornell network, your links need to be prefaced with: http://resolver.library.cornell.edu... Links or bookmarks with proxy.library.cornell.edu in them should not be used since they bypass the authentication server and will not work consistently. To get the correct URL for your link, find the resource in the online catalog, Find it!, or Find e-Journals. For Windows, right-click on the resource’s link and choose Add to Favorites (for Internet Explorer) or Bookmark This Link (for Netscape and Firefox). For Mac, left-click on the resource's link while holding the Ctrl key and choose Add Link to Bookmarks (for Netscape and Safari). These links can be added to web pages and Blackboard course sites. Individual articles in a licensed journal Articles can be difficult to bookmark or link, since not all of them are given persistent (permanent) URLs by the publisher. Even if a persistent URL exists, it may not be obvious what it is since different journals have different methods for constructing persistent links. Sometimes providers will include on journal websites permanent links to specific articles, sometimes identified as DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers), or as OpenURLs. Alternatively, some providers will give information on how to build a permanent link from their system. Occasionally you can use the URL in your web browser's address bar. Regardless of the exact form of the permanent link, access to licensed journals is normally restricted to Cornell users. Because of the authentication process necessary to access restricted resources, your links need to be prefaced with: http://encompass.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/checkIP.cgi?access=gateway_standard%26url=
To link to an article with a DOI: In addition to the http://encompass.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/checkIP.cgi?access=gateway_standard%26url=, add the following: http://dx.doi.org/, making the whole prefix: http://encompass.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/checkIP.cgi?access=gateway_standard%26url=http://dx.doi.org/ Therefore if an article had the following DOI: doi:10.1038/nature04674, the link would be as follows: http://encompass.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/checkIP.cgi?access=gateway_standard%26url=http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1038/nature04674
To link to an article with another type of persistent URL: If the article does not have a DOI but the database or journal provides another type of persistent link, use: http://encompass.library.cornell.edu/cgi-bin/checkIP.cgi?access=gateway_standard%26url= prefix and that persistent URL For example, to link to an article with a persistent link of http://jeb.biologists.org/cgi/content/abstract/199/1/21, the URL that will allow both on and off campus access is: If the database does not provide a persistent link, try using the link provided in the browser but please be aware that this link may not always function. PLEASE NOTE: It is important to test your links from off-campus after creation. If they are not working, make sure that there are no extra spaces or punctuation in your URL and verify that the library has licensed access to the article. If the link is correctly formed and you should have access and you are still encountering difficulties, contact LIBGATEWAY-L. If you are using another service outside of Cornell’s regularly licensed resources that asks for the library’s OpenURL resolver to link to articles (such as the social bookmarking service Connotea), you can use the following: http://resolver.library.cornell.edu/net/openurl/?. For all resources besides Connotea, please e-mail LIBGATEWAY-L so that the service can be added to our link resolver by our IT department. After this is completed, you will be notified and you should be able to use the service. Searches in the library catalog Directions for permanently linking to searches in the Cornell Library Catalog can be found at http://www.library.cornell.edu/newhelp/res_tools/catalog/cannedsearch.html
