goal 5: Promote more efficient use of existing Library resources and add new resources to advance the Library's mission. Medical College Library/ Cornell University Library Cooperation Staff of Cornell Medical Library and Ithaca counterparts met in July 1999 to identify areas of common ground. Recommendations included adding Cornell Medical to all appropriate negotiations with vendors for databases, adding Cornell Med participation in Science Team meetings through speakerphone, and sharing reference expertise more effectively. Reallocation The Library has reviewed existing operations and approved changes in procedures resulting in the redirection of $300,000 toward higher priority areas. Foundation and Corporate Support 21 successful grant proposals yielding $2.1 million were submitted. A detailed list of grants received is included in Appendix III. Individual Giving The Library hired a new director for Library External Affairs, published its first issue of a new donor-oriented newsletter, Cornell Read, and exceeded its goals for fundraising. Carl Kroch, a major benefactor of the Library, died in February 1999, leaving a bequest of over $10 million to the Library. As of June 30, 1999, the Library has received a total of $4,440,092
in new gifts and commitments. Unrestricted giving was $412,423 versus
a goal of $346,000. Current use restricted, which includes gifts for facility
and capital improvements as well as program support, was $2,872,714 versus
a goal of $1,360,000. Endowment was $1,154,956 toward a three-year goal
of $4 million. Additionally, $1,860,000 was raised for the Mann Library
Endowment Campaign against a goal of $2.3 million. The Africana Library was featured at a reception held at the Swann Galleries in New York City on the eve of their annual auction of books and memorabilia relating to African-American history. The event raised funds for collection development in the Africana Library.
