How does it work?
Passkey simply prepends the URL of the Cornell University Library's proxy script to the URL of the current page and loads that page.
Step 1. I am currently working off campus, trying to get to Elsevier's ScienceDirect homepage — http://www.sciencedirect.com/ — and my Cornell affiliation is not recognized, so I can't get into the database without paying a fee.
Step 2. So I click on Passkey bookmarklet from my browser's bookmark toolbar or my bookmark list.
Step 3. As a result, I am prompted to enter my Cornell University NetID and password to verify my Cornell credentials.
Step 4. My request is then automatically redirected to http://www.sciencedirect.com.proxy.library.cornell.edu/
Step 5. I can now get into the database, read online journals as though I am in one of the libraries or somewhere else on-campus, giving me access to all materials that are licensed for use by Cornell University Library patrons only.
I tried the CU Library bookmarklet, but I still cannot get access to the resource. What can I do?
There are some cases in which the bookmarklet will not work properly. Here are a few reasons why it might not work:
2. The Cornell University Library does not subscribe to the resource.
Solution: Please check the Cornell University Library Catalog or Ask a Librarian for assistance. In some cases, especially if the resource you are trying to reach is an electronic article, the library may be able to acquire a copy on your behalf through Interlibrary Loan.
3. If you're still having trouble, please Ask a Librarian.
